IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
It is often argued that possessing a residential is considered more crucial than leasing one in several nations. I think this is a bad decision. In this essay, I will discuss both negative and positive sides and support my view.
On one hand, some societies believed that buying a house is very important. This makes individuals work hard and own a house as fast as possible. Owning a house is not much easy, people have to work for years and then they will be able to buy a house. This kind of trend in society makes some people overwhelmed and challenging to live peacefully because of not purchasing a house which may be difficult for them due to some reason. There are several incidents happened in life that consumed all the money. On the other hand renting a house is much easier. People can focus on other expenses rather than just saving for life to buy a house. They can improve the standard of living. They can get good medical treatment. Their children will be able study in good school. Rented person can easily relocate to other position like if there is no good college near them. Instead of burning money on transport facility they can shift near to the college. In conclusion renting or owning a house depend upon the situations of individuals, their interest, comfort and needs. Renting a house is far more better than owning one. You can easily relocate, do not have to worry about buying a house, saving and many more.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The essay addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the importance of home ownership and providing a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the explanation of why people feel overwhelmed by the pressure to buy a house is vague, and the argument for renting could be more robustly supported with specific examples. While a position is stated, the essay lacks a deep exploration of the 'why' behind the cultural importance of ownership. To improve, ensure that each point is fully extended with clear reasoning and illustrative examples rather than listing general benefits or drawbacks.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive. Phrases like 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand' are used, but the internal flow between sentences within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed. For instance, the transition between the difficulty of buying a house and the mention of 'incidents happened in life' is abrupt and lacks a clear logical link. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'possessing a residential' (should be 'a residence' or 'a home') and 'rented person' (should be 'renters' or 'tenants'). The essay relies on simple, repetitive vocabulary like 'good', 'buy', and 'house'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'financial stability', 'property ladder', 'flexibility', or 'long-term investment', while ensuring they are used in the correct context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally hinder the flow. Examples include 'Owning a house is not much easy' (should be 'not very easy'), 'There are several incidents happened' (should be 'have happened'), and 'far more better' (a double comparative error). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with sentence boundaries and word order. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and reducing errors in verb tense and comparative structures. Increasing the variety of complex sentences while maintaining accuracy will help move toward a higher band.
