IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In some countries people highly prefer to buy their own home rather than living on a rent. There are several psycological and demographical factors associated with their interest of purchasing the home. In this essay we analyze the reason behind their decision and whether it has positve or negative outcomes.
Firstly, people consider better to buy home then paying recurring amount of rent each month. They even ready to take loans that they would pay gradually and beocomes the owner of their home rather then giving rent and not becoming owner at the end. Secondly, people consider home as an asset like gold, silver or stocks whose value is going to increase overtime and can give them good return after about 10 or 20 years. Thirdly, they feel a sence of security in owning a home because no one has the power to force them to leave the home.
Living in a rented home ensures you that you only need to pay a small chunk of amount every month compared to what you needs to pay to buy a home. This can be a good option economically but it does not ensures you get the ownership of that home at somepoint. Furthurmore damages to home may leads to have conflicts with the owner of home.
Regarding both situations, one could not affort the big amount required to own a home for living while not intereseted in only paying rents and not taking ownership at somepoint. The Morgage system is best that offers you to pay amount of home as you pay the rent of home and gets the ownership of home when you have paid the amount of home in the face of rent each month. That gives you the ownership as well as not worrying about collecting a huge amount for buying a home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt: it identifies reasons for home ownership and discusses whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the reasons for ownership are clearly listed, the discussion on whether the situation is positive or negative is less explicit. The essay lacks a clear, consistent stance throughout the body paragraphs, as the final paragraph seems to shift focus toward the mechanics of mortgage systems rather than evaluating the societal impact. To improve, ensure that the 'positive or negative' aspect is explicitly argued and supported with more depth rather than just describing the financial process.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Thirdly', and 'Furthermore', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the connection between the mortgage system and the previous arguments about ownership is slightly disjointed. Paragraphing is used, but the final paragraph is somewhat repetitive in its focus on financial mechanics rather than synthesizing the previous points. Improving the flow between sentences would elevate the score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several spelling errors ('psycological', 'demographical', 'sence', 'affort', 'Morgage', 'intereseted') and some awkward collocations like 'living on a rent' instead of 'renting'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'asset', 'recurring amount', and 'ownership', the range is limited. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on accurate spelling and using more sophisticated collocations to express ideas more naturally and precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('damages to home may leads to', 'it does not ensures you'), incorrect article usage, and awkward phrasing ('beocomes the owner', 'in the face of rent'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors is noticeable. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction, specifically verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement, before attempting more complex structures.
