IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries, owning a home instead of renting one is considered very important. This essay will discuss the reasons behind this preference and explain why i believe it is generally a positive development.

There are several reasons why people prefer to own a house. Firstly, home ownership provides security. People who own their home do not have to worry about increasing rent or other major problems. Families also encourages the younger generations to buy property because it is seen as a valueable long term investment.

In my opnion, i think this is the positive situation for several reasons. There are many reasons for taht. The main advantage is that homeowners can build wealth over time because the value of the property often increases by time. Instead of paying the rent every month they are investing in other things that may also provide financial benefits in the future. Therefore i thing that the owning a home is more best because they can invest there money in other things that may also provides them more benefit in future.

However, buying a house is also not easy. Property prices are very higher in many countries such as pakistan is one of the example of them. People may had to take large loans that require many years to repay it will some tax. I thing that there are long term benefits of buying a home. Therefore people prefers to buy a home because there are many benefits such as security, rent, other major peoblems and many more.

Therfore i should prefer to buy a home instead of renting it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for home ownership and an opinion on whether it is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation of financial benefits is repetitive, and the mention of 'security' is not fully expanded upon. The argument regarding the difficulty of buying a home in Pakistan is relevant but lacks a clear connection to the overall stance on whether the situation is positive or negative. To improve, you should aim to provide more nuanced explanations and ensure that every point directly supports your central thesis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'There are many reasons for taht' and 'Therefore i thing that the owning a home is more best' disrupt the flow of the argument. Additionally, the transition between the discussion of benefits and the challenges of buying a home is abrupt. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'nevertheless') would significantly enhance the logical progression of your ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several spelling errors, such as 'valueable', 'opnion', 'taht', and 'peoblems', which distract the reader. The phrasing is often simplistic or repetitive, such as 'more best' and 'increases by time'. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring accurate spelling. Expanding your range of topic-specific vocabulary related to finance and real estate would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Families also encourages', 'it may also provides'), incorrect article usage, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'the owning a home is more best'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalisation of 'I'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band.
