IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many nation being an owner of the house is more crucial then leasing the property. There are many reasons behind this, and it has more advantages then being disadvantageous, which are discussed further.

Discussing the reasons, the first and foremost one is social status. This is because, many individual wants to sow their financial status to the community. They believe, being an owner, bring name and frame in the society. Everyone will give them respect. Apart from that, It is important for taking a low interest loan. It has been observed that, in India, many people took loan from the banks on their homes and use that money towards child's school fees or business.

There are some merits of such a situation. The most important is affordability of house. These days, in some part of the world, houses are more affordable to purchase then pay rent for years. To add to it, many financial institute provide loan on that, which makes it more easier. Moreover, owning a home gives mental stability. They don't need to take permission from anyone else for renovating or changing the things from the house. Also, there is no any guarantee on your stay at the same house for long time. Owner can refuse to renew rent agreement.

To sum up, some people believe that, owning a home gives respect, name and frame, also some financial help for the rest of their life. According to my perspective, purchase a home is more beneficial then being on the lease.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for home ownership and the evaluation of whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant, such as social status and financial stability. However, the development is somewhat superficial. For instance, the point about 'low interest loans' is mentioned but not fully explained in terms of how ownership facilitates this. The position is clear throughout, but the arguments could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points and reiterates the writer's stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic progression of ideas from reasons to merits. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'To add to it' or 'Apart from that'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the transition between social status and financial loans feels abrupt. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to create a more natural, cohesive text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of incorrect word choice or collocation, such as 'name and frame' (likely meaning 'fame'), 'financial institute' (should be 'institutions'), and 'more easier' (a grammatical error that also impacts lexical accuracy). The range is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptors. To improve, the student should focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct context. Spelling errors like 'individual' (should be plural 'individuals') also occur.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('many individual wants'), article usage ('the house' vs 'a house'), and comparative structures ('more easier'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary commas appearing frequently, such as 'It has been observed that, in India, many people...'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to distract the reader and indicate a lack of control over complex structures.
