IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Having home is an essential thing for people in life.Every one desires to have his/her own home. But there were many people in the world who could not afford their personal home due to some reasons such as money, place etc.some people think owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people, but some people prefer taking home as a rent. I will agree with both of these cases. Now, I am discussing both cases and describing you its positive or negative solution.
First of all, I am going to describe you the benefits of owning a home personally or at a rent. Its a good thing to buy a home because you can live at your home freely without any restrictions of the owner of home like at a rent.you can live with your own desired h place by purchasing it.While on the other hand, having home at a rent is not a bad things. But actually, renting a home reduces your expenses like having a guard for a home. The society in which you are living provides a guard for the security of whole society. While the maintenance of the home is the responsibility of the owner of a home.
Moving towards the next paragraph of my discussion, I will try to describe you some of the disadvantages of buying a home personally or at a rent.Disadvantages of having a personal home fears or threats you of having stolen things in your absence in your home. You should have to pay for a guard to protect your home in your absence. You have to pay for the maintenance of your home from your own pocket. While disadvantages of having home at rent involves that you have to pay timely and not be late. You must have to follow owners restrictions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why home ownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation. However, the development of ideas is limited. The arguments regarding security and maintenance are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. The position is stated in the introduction, but the discussion remains superficial, failing to fully explore the social or economic implications of home ownership versus renting. To improve, you should provide more detailed examples and logical explanations for your points, ensuring that the 'why' and the 'positive/negative' aspects are clearly distinguished and thoroughly supported.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. While there are attempts at cohesive devices like 'First of all' and 'Moving towards the next paragraph', the transitions between sentences are often abrupt. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'I will agree with both of these cases' followed by a discussion that does not clearly delineate the two sides. The use of cohesive devices is repetitive, and the logical flow could be improved by using more varied linking words to connect ideas within and between paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There is frequent repetition of basic words like 'home', 'rent', and 'owner'. Some word choices are unnatural or imprecise, such as 'fears or threats you of having stolen things' and 'taking home as a rent'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more sophisticated vocabulary related to housing, finance, and social trends, and work on improving your collocations to ensure your writing sounds more natural and academic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical errors, such as 'there were many people' (should be 'there are'), 'having home' (missing article), and 'not be late' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods and commas. Frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage are present throughout the text. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring they are grammatically accurate.
