IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this current era of economical problems and social barriers, having a own home is a blessings of Allah. It is crucial that different people have different perceptions and level on intelligence regarding owing a home rather than renting. I will discuss more broadly in the upcoming paragraphs that will lead to a plausible conclusions.

Therefore, from my perspectives, there are various viewpoints to consider. First and foremost, having a own home reduces stress, anxiety, depression and fear of the owner of giving notice of one or two month period of leaving the home. Those who have positioned themselves as alternative and burnt the midnight oil can reach at the desired position. Owing a home gives you confidence to construct and renovate the house according to you will and desire and can construct anything that you dream about. It also decrease the pressure of giving amount as a rent on every month within a due date and can use the same amount of rent in any useful purpose without any kind of fear.

Furthermore, some people took it a business point of view. They spent the same amount of the house in the business and generate huge amount of profit from it. They give that little amount of rent of the house from the same profit. Government also made a huge plan of own house on installments. Higher authorities have not only paid attention on the gravity of the matter but also have take some serious steps to ensure positive outcomes.

In conclusion, taking these point of consideration, from a personal point of view, I am inclined to believe that owing a home helps you to spend your whole life with your family in a peaceful way.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is uneven. While the reasons for ownership (security, autonomy) are clear, the discussion regarding whether it is a positive or negative situation is somewhat underdeveloped and lacks a balanced perspective. The introduction is overly generic and does not clearly outline the essay's direction. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph directly links back to the 'positive or negative' aspect of the prompt, providing more nuanced analysis rather than just listing benefits.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as the transition 'Therefore, from my perspectives' which does not logically follow the preceding paragraph. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the third paragraph where the shift to a 'business point of view' feels abrupt. The conclusion is brief and does not effectively summarize the main arguments presented. Improving the variety and precision of linking words would help the flow of ideas between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'having a own home is a blessings of Allah' (should be 'a blessing'), 'level on intelligence' (should be 'level of intelligence'), and 'giving amount as a rent' (should be 'paying rent'). The phrase 'burnt the midnight oil' is used incorrectly in this context, as it refers to working late rather than saving for a home. More precise collocations are needed to convey ideas effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include article misuse ('a own home'), subject-verb agreement ('it also decrease'), and incorrect verb forms ('have take some serious steps'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are clunky due to awkward phrasing. To reach a higher band, you should focus on reducing these recurring errors and ensuring that complex structures are used with greater accuracy, particularly regarding tense consistency and article usage.
