IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, people have become advanced significantly and also the standard of living has raised. In some countries it is believed that renting an apartment or home is pivotal rather than owning a home. I believe, this is a positive development as living on rent allows them to maintain sufficient funds for their upcoming future instead of using all money together to buy a home.

To begin with, owning a home requires a lot of money and time. People invest more time to find suitable land, architectural expenses and paper work related to property registration. To exemplify this, even an average salaried person, who wants to build their own home, works delicately to maintain their own and family's standard of living. Therefore, it usually requires lucrative income and time to achieve their own home. As a result, this is the reason people prefer to live in rented apartments.

In addition to this, people have fewer maintenance responsibilities and easily relocate. People living in rented homes, flats are not bothered about the maintenance. They heavily rely on landlords for the small breakages and maintenance. For instance, an individual who owns home have certain responsibilities, when they needs to visit out of town have worried about their home and basic amenities available, Conversely, the one who is already living in a rented flat is much sorted about such things. Furthermore, people who are living in a rented home are flexible enough to switch jobs and relocate easily to another city as per their career demand. Therefore, it is evident that renting a home is more suitable choice for everyone rather than owning a home.

To conclude, renting flats allows one to fulfill basic living standard. Although, people are less bother about maintenance charges and are able to relocate according to their desired jobs. Hence, I believe it is the positive development as it gives ones right to choose jobs in different locations instead of having fear of leaving their own home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the introduction contains a contradiction; you state that in some countries renting is 'pivotal' rather than owning, which contradicts the prompt's premise that owning is 'very important'. This confusion slightly impacts the clarity of your position. While your arguments regarding financial flexibility and mobility are relevant and supported with examples, the development is somewhat repetitive. To improve, ensure your introduction accurately reflects the prompt and provide more nuanced analysis rather than repeating the same points about maintenance and relocation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition to this', and 'To conclude' to signal transitions. However, some of the linking is mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly awkward, such as the transition between the second and third paragraphs. Referencing is occasionally unclear, for example, the phrase 'the one who is already living in a rented flat is much sorted about such things' is informal and lacks precise cohesion. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would elevate this score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pivotal', 'architectural expenses', and 'lucrative income'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors. For example, 'standard of living has raised' should be 'has risen', and 'works delicately' is an incorrect collocation in this context. The phrase 'much sorted about such things' is too informal for an academic essay. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoid informal or colloquial expressions that do not fit the formal tone required for IELTS Task 2.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Examples include 'people have become advanced significantly' (awkward phrasing), 'when they needs to visit' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'people are less bother' (should be 'bothered'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in comma usage and sentence boundaries. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex structures are formed accurately. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences will be key to moving into the 7.0 band.
