IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Nowadays, people in different countries dont have their home they prefer to live in the rental property that is very important to the individual because when they live in any rental property they are stressed free. In this essay we will discuss both positive and negative sitution.

On the one hand, people who lives in rental property they don't have to take stress of repairing. Individual can live peacefully and stressfree on rent. It is also easy to change to new house when needed. If somebody from different city and working in another city ,will not buy a house in every part of the country, always find a nice loaction to live.

On the other hand owning a house is a blessing. If you have your own house you don't need to take care of the things which make disturbance for other. In a house we live with complete family which makes happy environment and stressfree environment for everyone. However some people believes that living on rent is easy but that dont know the pros and cons of living on rent. So much restriction from the owner of the house.

In my conclusion, owning a home rather than renting one is important to people, because of easily shifting people choose to live on rent. living on rent is much easier to shift. But owing a personal house is a blessing. If you have your own home, you don't have to depend on anyone if you dont have any job than how you will pay rent. So being a personal home is necessary.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: why home ownership is important and whether it is a positive or negative situation. However, the development of ideas is limited. The arguments regarding the benefits of renting (stress-free, flexibility) and owning (stability, independence) are mentioned but lack depth or specific examples to fully support the points. The position is somewhat inconsistent; while you mention both sides, the conclusion does not clearly state your final stance on whether the trend is positive or negative, which is a requirement for a higher band score. To improve, ensure each paragraph provides a clear, well-supported argument that directly answers the 'why' and 'positive/negative' aspects of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate. For example, the transition 'However some people believes' is used incorrectly to introduce a point that supports the previous argument rather than contrasting it. Additionally, the progression of ideas within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed, particularly in the conclusion, where the summary of points feels repetitive rather than synthesised. Improving the use of linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'nevertheless' would help create a smoother flow between sentences and ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There is a reliance on basic, repetitive phrasing such as 'stress free' and 'easy'. Some word choices are imprecise, such as 'being a personal home is necessary' or 'make disturbance for other'. There are also minor errors in word formation, such as 'sitution' and 'loaction'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to housing, such as 'financial stability', 'long-term investment', 'transient lifestyle', or 'autonomy'. Focusing on collocations will also help improve the naturalness of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('people who lives', 'some people believes'), article usage ('in the rental property'), and missing words ('if you dont have any job than how you will pay rent'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and sentence boundaries would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
