IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some countries, owning a home is considered more important than renting one. This is mainly because people see home ownership as a sign of financial security and stability. in my opinion, this is generally a positive situation, although it can sometimes creates financial pressure.
There are several reasons why people prefer to own a home. First of all, owning a house provides a sense of security because people do not have to worry about increasing rent or losing their accommodation. they can live in their own property for as long as they want and can make changes to it according to their preferences. Secondly, a house is often considered a long-term investment. If its value increase over time, owners can benefit financially in the future. For this reason, many people believe that paying a mortgage is better than spending money on rent every month.
I believe that this preference is mostly positive. Home ownership can provide financial stability, particularly after a person has paid off their mortgage. in addition, people can leave their property as an asset for their children, which may provide financial support for the next generation. However, buying a home can also have negative effects when people cannot comfortably afford it. Large mortgage payments may cause financial stress and prevent people from spending money on other important needs.
In conclusion, people in some countries prefer owning a home because it provides security and can be valuable long-term investment. Although purchasing a property can put financial pressure on some individuals. I believe that home ownership is generally a positive development when people can afford it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly explain why home ownership is important—citing security and investment potential—and provide a balanced view on whether it is a positive or negative situation. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting ideas are fully developed; for instance, while you mention that owning a home is an investment, you could briefly elaborate on how this compares to the volatility of other markets or the specific economic benefits of equity building to add more depth to your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'In addition' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, the progression between sentences is occasionally mechanical. Additionally, there are minor issues with paragraph structure, such as the sentence fragment in the conclusion: 'Although purchasing a property can put financial pressure on some individuals.' This should be joined to the following sentence to maintain flow and grammatical integrity.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'financial security', 'long-term investment', and 'equity' (implied). The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic context. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate greater flexibility. For example, instead of 'make changes to it', you could use 'customize the property' or 'undertake structural modifications'. Your spelling is accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. However, there are several recurring grammatical errors that prevent a higher score. Specifically, there are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it can sometimes creates' should be 'it can sometimes create'; 'its value increase' should be 'its value increases') and capitalization errors at the start of sentences (e.g., 'in my opinion', 'they can live', 'in addition'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy score.
