IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is significantly essential, in some nations, to have your own house instead of renting a place to live. Although renting houses might be convenient for some population, having your own place can play a key role in your future life in saving a considerable amount of money and gives people serendipity in knowing that they own an asset and they don't have to be concerned about their residence.

A widespread proportion of population in various countries find it an utmost necessity to have their own property, which has resulted in them saving a lot for their family's future, living expenses, children's education. They don't have to spend hundreds and thousands of their income on renting apartments, and this idea for a better living is making their life easier for them. Students in Pakistan, for example, have to find accommodation, and have to rent flats that are located near their universities. This has resulted in great number of students renting areas and has surged the burden on their parents financially. If they had their own homes nearby, they wouldn't have to spend so much money on being tenants.

From my perspective, this is a definetly a positive situation and i find it extremely imperative for individuals to put an emphasis on having their own house. Because this certainly gives you a sense of ownership and feeling of security. Having your own land feels surreal. You get the privacy that you deserve. What if you do not have your own identity? How would that make you feel? In the same way, your property is your identity. Some landlords, for instance, make you feel uncomfortable and want you to acclimate yourself according to them. This is particularly very prevalent in Pakistan and residents find it very difficult to handle.

In conclusion, owning a place of your own is not affordable by everyone but is still considered essential in some countries as it saves a lot for your peaceful life ahead and gives a feeling of possession.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining the importance of home ownership and providing a clear opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant, particularly the discussion on financial security and the psychological benefits of ownership. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The example regarding students in Pakistan is a bit tangential, as the prompt focuses on the general importance of home ownership rather than specifically on student housing. While the position is clear throughout, the arguments could be more deeply extended to reach a higher band, as some points, such as the 'identity' argument, are slightly repetitive and lack depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Although', 'For example', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and the use of referencing could be more precise. For instance, the link between the student example and the broader argument about financial burden is clear, but the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better connect the financial and psychological aspects of the topic.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'financial burden', 'widespread proportion', and 'acclimate yourself'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as using 'serendipity' to describe the feeling of owning a home, which is not the correct context for that word. Additionally, 'significantly essential' is a redundant collocation. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the accuracy is inconsistent. To improve, focus on using words that precisely convey your intended meaning rather than choosing complex-sounding words that may not fit the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'this is a definetly a positive situation' (spelling and article usage), 'is not affordable by everyone' (preposition error), and 'a great number of students renting areas' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor slips. While you attempt complex structures, the frequency of errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed without errors will help improve your score in this criterion.
