IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There are two main reasons why people prefer homeownership over renting. First of all, owning a house offers long-term stability and personal security. Tenants who rent often face unexpected problems like sudden rent increases or eviction if the landlord decides to sell the property. In contrast, homeowners have full control over their living space. Secondly, property is widely seen as safe financial investment. Instead of spending money on monthly rent which never returns, mortgage payments help individuals build wealth because property values usually increase over time.
However, this strong societal preference has both positive and negative impacts. On the positive side, high rates of homeownership can lead to safer and more stable communities. People who own their houses usually care more about their local neighborhoods and stay there for a longer duration. On the negative side, severe social pressure to buy a home can cause extreme financial stress. Nowadays, house prices are rising much faster than average salaries. This forces young couples to take out massive bank loans that they might struggle to repay. Additionaly, owning a house reduces a person's mobility, making it harder to move for better job opportunities.
In conclusion, people prioritize buying homes because it offers emotional security and a reliable wat to build wealth. While this trend creates stable neighborhoods, it also puts heavy financial pressure on citizens, meaning it is a mix of both positive and negative outcomes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The essay addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for homeownership and evaluating the situation. However, the response is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat briefly stated. For instance, the point about 'mobility' is a strong observation but is not fully developed. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more specific examples or detailed explanations to ensure the response is sufficiently developed and meets the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the reasons for homeownership from the evaluation of its impact. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'In contrast', and 'On the positive side' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between the two main body paragraphs is slightly more nuanced to better connect the reasons for the trend with the subsequent evaluation.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'long-term stability', 'financial investment', and 'social pressure'. There is a minor typo ('Additionaly' instead of 'Additionally') and a small error ('reliable wat' instead of 'reliable way'), but these do not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally accurate and fits the context well. To move to a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to show greater precision and flexibility in your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound, such as 'Tenants who rent often face unexpected problems like sudden rent increases'. There are very few grammatical errors, and the punctuation is generally accurate. The control over complex structures is good, though the range could be slightly broader to demonstrate more flexibility. The occasional minor slips do not interfere with the clarity of your message, indicating a solid command of grammar.
