IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In some countries, owning a home is considered more important than renting one. This is mainly because home ownership provides people with financial security and a sense of stability. In my opinion, although purchasing a house can create financial pressure, it is generally a positive development.
One major reason why people prefer to own a home is that it provides long-term security. Unlike tenants, homeowners do not have to worry about increasing rents, sudden changes in rental agreements, or being asked to leave their accommodation. Moreover, a house can be regarded as a valuable investment because its price may increase over time. For example, a family that purchases a property in a developing city may find that its value rises considerably after several years. Therefore, owing a house can provide both emotional and financial stability.
Another advantage is that home ownership gives people greater freedom. Homeowners can renovate their property, change its design, or create a comfortable living environment without seeking permission from a landlord. In addition, owning a house can provide a sense of achievements and independence, particularly for families who want to establish a permanent place for their children.
However, buying a home can also have some drawbacks. It often requires a large amount of money, and many people have to talk long-term loans to afford a property. This may cause financial stress, especially for those with unstable incomes. nevertheless, careful financial planning can reduce this burden.
In conclusion, people consider home ownership important because it offers stability, independence and financial security. Although purchasing a property can be expensive and stressful, I believe its long-term benefits make it a positive situation overall.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing clear reasons for the importance of home ownership (security, investment, freedom) and a distinct opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between emotional stability and financial investment. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion by briefly contrasting the 'negative' aspects more deeply, perhaps by discussing the impact of high interest rates on the broader economy, which would add more depth to the evaluation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader. The progression of ideas is smooth. While the structure is sound, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes standard; incorporating a wider variety of linking phrases or more sophisticated referencing could enhance the flow further. Overall, the paragraphing is logical and contributes to a clear, coherent argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the topic, such as 'financial security', 'long-term investment', and 'unstable incomes'. The language is generally precise and natural. There are a few minor slips, such as 'talk long-term loans' (should be 'take') and 'sense of achievements' (should be 'achievement'). To improve, try to incorporate more idiomatic collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language. The current range is sufficient to convey your ideas clearly and with some flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are a few minor errors, such as the aforementioned 'talk' instead of 'take' and the typo 'nevertheless' (which should be capitalized at the start of the sentence). Punctuation is generally correct. To achieve a higher band, ensure that you proofread for small slips in verb choice and capitalization, and try to vary your sentence structure even more by using a wider range of subordinate clauses or inversion for emphasis.
