IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some countries, owning a home is considered more important than renting one. There are several reasons for this preference, and I believe it is generally a positive situation.
Firstly, owning a house provides people with financial security. Instead of paying rent every month, homeowners can invest their money in their own property. Moreover, houses often increase in value over time, so they can become a useful investment for the future. Secondly, owning a home provides stability and independence. People do not have to worry about landlords increasing rent or asking them to leave.
I believe this is a positive trend because having a permanent home can provide families with comfort and security. It can also help people prepare financially for retirement. However, buying a property can be expensive and may require people to take large loans.
In conclusion, people prefer home ownership because it provides security, independence and financial benefits. Overall, I believe this is a positive situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which severely limits the development of ideas. While the points regarding financial security and stability are relevant, they are presented in a very brief, list-like fashion without sufficient elaboration or concrete examples. To reach a higher band, you must expand on your arguments with detailed explanations and illustrative examples to fully develop your position.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' helps guide the reader through the text. However, because the response is so short, the progression of ideas feels abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the lack of depth makes the overall structure feel underdeveloped. To improve, ensure that each paragraph contains a topic sentence followed by supporting evidence and a concluding thought to create a more cohesive flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and conveys the intended meaning clearly. You use some relevant terms such as 'financial security', 'investment', and 'permanent home'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There is little evidence of less common or idiomatic vocabulary that would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repeating basic words like 'important' or 'positive'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The grammar is generally accurate, and the sentences are easy to follow. You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Instead of paying rent every month, homeowners can invest their money in their own property.' There are very few grammatical errors, which is a strength. However, the range of structures is somewhat restricted. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, while maintaining your current level of accuracy.
