IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Many individuals think that instead of renting one, owning a home is very effective for them. I believe that this is a positive situation because in own house people have their own freedom and they can save money as well as comfortable place rather than renting one.
One the one hand, in some countries most of the people owning housing because they want freedoms and they can do whatever they want, and in renting they have to obey the rules and regulations of owner. For example, in India many individuals are living in the tenements, and they have to follow the rules of owner like, do not make some noise a little bit, and they have to pay money at the end of the month. So, after that my one relative bought his own apartment in India. Now, he is living his life freely and do whatever he want in his own house.
One the other hand, they want there own one rather than renting one. Many people have their dream to buy there house because instead of paying rent they want to save money and build or own there castle that save money, and they don't have to pay rent. In some nations, people it is comfortable to stay at owning a house than renting one. For instance, in Nepal people have there own house and some of them planning to owning a house. They feel rent expenses is more and not a comfortable place.
In conclusion, I believe that owning a house rather than renting one is more important for people and this is a positive to save money and for there freedoms.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive. However, the development is limited. While the writer mentions 'freedom' and 'saving money', the arguments are repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the example of the relative in India is anecdotal and does not fully explore the broader societal or economic implications of home ownership. The conclusion is brief and merely restates the introduction without adding synthesis. To reach a higher band, the ideas need to be more fully extended with clearer logical links to the prompt's requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'One the one hand' and 'One the other hand' are used, but the internal flow within paragraphs is disjointed. There is a lack of variety in linking words, and the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the sentence 'In some nations, people it is comfortable to stay at owning a house'. The progression of ideas is present but feels somewhat forced rather than natural, which limits the score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. Words like 'owning', 'renting', 'house', and 'money' are used frequently without much variation. There are several instances of incorrect word choice or collocation, such as 'living in the tenements' (which is used incorrectly here) and 'planning to owning a house'. The student struggles to use less common lexical items, and the phrasing often sounds unnatural or simplistic. To improve, the student should focus on learning synonyms and collocations related to housing, finance, and personal autonomy to demonstrate a wider and more precise range of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are persistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('people it is comfortable'), incorrect verb forms ('planning to owning'), and misuse of articles and pronouns ('there own one', 'my one relative'). While the student attempts some complex sentences, they are often structurally flawed. Simple sentences are generally more accurate, but the overall control of grammar is weak. The frequent errors in basic sentence construction and word forms indicate that the student needs to focus on foundational grammar before attempting more complex structures.
