IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Home has been regarded as one of the basic needs of everyone in the society. Own home is much better than rented one is very important in some countries. With technological and social development, it is necessary to have their home due to a numbers of reasons. However, different perspectives exist on this matter, I firmly believe that a balanced and sustainable approach is essential to discuss this point of view.

On the one hand, supporters of having their own house argue that we can easily maintain and adjust here according to their own requirements. We can renovate it and make changes whenever we required. We donot have to pay every month rent, this decreases our unnecessary stress and anxiety. Furthermore, we feel very confident in our personal home as this is our property support in time of the dire need. Consequently, we remain very calm and relax in our personal house rather than rented one.

On the other hand, advocates of rented house contend that we can easily relocate from one place to other without any tension. The huge ammount is not stuck in form of house , so we can use it in many benefacial businesses. Moreover, we donot have to pay taxes.

In conclusion, although both viewpoints have considerable merits, I remain convinced that owning a home is very good initiative and it is a positive situation. Personal home rather than rented one in modern society is very important not only for the individual but also for the national development and well-being.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the reasons provided for ownership—renovation and lack of rent—are common but lack depth or specific examples. The discussion on the 'negative' side (renting) is also quite brief. While a position is clear, the arguments could be extended further to reach a higher band. The introduction is slightly repetitive and lacks a clear thesis statement that outlines the essay's structure, which limits the overall impact of the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. For example, the sentence 'However, different perspectives exist on this matter, I firmly believe...' is a comma splice, which disrupts the logical progression. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the use of 'here' in the second paragraph, which does not clearly refer back to a specific noun. Paragraphing is present but could be more effectively managed to enhance the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choices and minor spelling errors, such as 'ammount' and 'benefacial'. The student relies on basic vocabulary like 'very important', 'very good', and 'very calm', which limits the sophistication of the writing. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of varied collocations and more academic terminology prevents the response from demonstrating a wider lexical range. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise synonyms and ensuring correct spelling of common academic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'we required' instead of 'we require'), missing articles (e.g., 'in form of house'), and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'Own home is much better than rented one is very important'). Punctuation errors, such as the aforementioned comma splice in the introduction, are also present. While the student attempts complex sentences, they are often faulty. A greater focus on sentence construction and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
