IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In certain nations, home ownership is considered indispensable, rather than renting a property. This essay will not only explore the feasible reasons behind this trend but will also evaluate whether it is a positive or negative development.
Commencing with the most compelling reason why people prefer to purchase house rather than renting one, the foremost reason is that it provides a stability. This can be attributed the fact that people can live in their own house until they want, unlike rented house, where rantel agreement is followed and they can spend their life with same neighborhood for prolonged period.
Additionally, another significant factor is that homeowners have greater freedom and control over their property. This is because individuals can paint, renovate, decorate their home according to their choice without seeking permission from a landlord. A good example of this is India where a considerable amount of people buy their own house in comparison with renting a property owing to having a freedom to Modify their property.
Despite these reasons, I contend that this is beneficial development and this is mainly because people feel a sense of achievement after buying a property. As in numerous culture s , having a own house is crucial to show social status and every parents want that their children have their own property. Thus , they consider this sign of success, which is pivotal for people to achieve. Moreover, another noticable benefit is that it offers a financial investment, since property is regarded as long -term investment in several societies and the price of its escalating every year, thereby obtaining more profit, which enhances their wealth. This can be clearly seen in several countries where people purchase their own property are three times more likely to increase their investment due to surging the price of property.
To conclude, buying a house is preferred by people because of having a more freedom and stability, which is not available in renting house. I assert that this is positive trend as it offers financial investment along with provide a sense of achievement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for home ownership and the evaluation of whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant, such as stability, freedom, social status, and financial investment. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding social status is mentioned but not fully explored in terms of its broader societal implications. The position is clear throughout, and the essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more nuanced analysis and deeper explanations for your points, rather than listing them briefly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Commencing with', 'Additionally', 'Despite these reasons', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the sentence 'This can be clearly seen in several countries where people purchase their own property are three times more likely...'. Improving the variety and naturalness of your linking words would enhance the overall flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'indispensable', 'prolonged period', and 'pivotal'. However, there are several inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'rantel agreement' (rental agreement), 'having a freedom to Modify', and 'price of its escalating'. Some phrasing is also slightly awkward, such as 'every parents want that their children have their own property'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over vocabulary and better attention to word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a stability', 'a own house'), subject-verb agreement ('every parents want'), and preposition usage ('attributed the fact'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. While these errors rarely impede communication, the frequency of these slips prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring consistent article usage would significantly improve your score.
