IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has been observed that civilians prefers to buy their personal properties instead of leaving on rent. I presume this is mainly because of financial security and freedom cause. In my perspective, this is a positive development because of asset building and sense of stability.

At the outset, there are few reasons why people look forward to acquire their own places. The foremost reason is to build their financial status and social expectations because they consider property values generally appreciate over time and home-ownership is a long term investment. Not only this, in most of the communities buying home considered as a major

life milestone which shows the maturity and social standing.

Furthermore, the main evident of this positive direction is adding own assets in their lifetime leads to create personal wealth rather than spending on rental properties. For instance, wealth is not only having money, leading to tighter-knit neighbourhoods and build tangible equity is also considered as this. By which, individuals save themselves from higher crime rates and more hustle life. Moreover, freedom to renovate, decorate and total control over their properties is also the another reason. For examples, they does not need to take permission to mold their places according to their needs which gives them full access of their life and make it more productive and enjoyable.

To conclude this discussion, although some reasons like debt burden and reducing mobility put negative impact on this trend but merits of having properties such as stronger communities and wealthy rich forces everyone to invest on having ownership to their lands.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether it is a positive or negative trend. The ideas are relevant, covering financial security, social status, and personal freedom. However, some arguments are under-developed or slightly confusing, such as the link between home ownership and 'higher crime rates'. While the position is clear, the development of ideas lacks the depth required for a higher band, as some points are stated rather than fully explored or supported with clear logic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'At the outset', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or forced. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but there are instances where the connection between sentences is weak, particularly in the second body paragraph where the link between 'wealth' and 'tighter-knit neighbourhoods' is not clearly explained, which momentarily disrupts the flow of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are several instances of awkward collocations and word choice errors. For example, 'civilians prefers' (should be 'people prefer'), 'leaving on rent' (should be 'living in rented accommodation'), and 'wealthy rich forces' (which is redundant and unclear). While the student attempts to use more sophisticated terms like 'tangible equity' and 'appreciate', the overall control is inconsistent, and some phrasing sounds unnatural or imprecise, which limits the score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('civilians prefers', 'they does not need') and incorrect verb forms ('look forward to acquire' should be 'look forward to acquiring'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and demonstrate a lack of control over more complex grammatical structures, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
