IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In many countries having a own home is most important than a renting one.

Basically I thought that it is a positive situation for the people having a owning home and there are many advantages of personal home. Firstly those people have their own homes and they have now need to pay any rent to home owner and it is very huge facility for the middle class people.

Secondly , the main benefit of self shelter is that the people no needs to pay any home tax to Government and this way saves the money of poor people and this habit makes the man very happy in his whole life and also helped to live a happy life.

Third reason is that if a man having his hand made home then always be free to do all activities in his building and no one who stopped him for any thing and people have no threat by government to not grow any other plants or crops in his home and also government gave many facilities to the owners.

On the other hand there are many disadvantages of having a own home and first is that the people needed do all kind of works in his home and if the home is on rent then this is the duty of owner and second is the main problem is for people who have a job in any company and when the man get his transfer then he need to shift his shelter to another place and this made him hopeless and if a man have a house on renting and he left his place any time when he want.

To sum up, I think owning a home is much better than renting one but in a few conditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is limited. The reasons provided, such as 'no tax to Government' or 'hand made home', are factually questionable or unclear, which weakens the argument. The position is stated but lacks depth and logical support. To improve, you should focus on providing more realistic and well-reasoned arguments, such as financial security, social status, or the psychological benefits of stability, rather than relying on inaccurate claims about taxation or construction.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as 'Basically I thought' to start the essay or 'Third reason is that'. The progression of ideas is often disjointed, particularly in the transition between the advantages and disadvantages. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the flow of arguments. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'nevertheless') and ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, clearly defined idea.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'home', 'people', and 'good/bad'. There are several instances of awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'self shelter', 'hand made home', and 'no needs to pay'. These errors occasionally impede the clarity of your message. To reach a higher band, you need to expand your vocabulary to include more precise, academic terms related to housing, finance, and social issues, and practice using them in the correct context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that affect readability. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people no needs to pay'), article usage (e.g., 'a own home'), and sentence structure (e.g., 'no one who stopped him'). The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with some attempts at complex ones that are often grammatically incorrect. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
