IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
I can't tell about the other countries but i can tell about my country where i'm living. so basically it depends on area which areas are living in if you're living outside the city that can cost you less rent and rather than inside city. if you owning a home that will best option because you don't need to vary about any place to live you have your own place. rent ing a place is so difficult in any country we need to follow the rules of the landlord, pay rent every month on time, some place you can't make noise after 10 pm, if something damage in the house you are responsible for the damage you need to pay for that to landlord there is no many restrictions on renting the house. there are some positive sides are rent covered all your Electricity, Hydro bills. The best thing is owning home is an option for you to be able to make some money from there because you can also put your basement rent that would helping in making money. in my opinion owning a home rather than renting is positive situation. no restrictions for anything whatever you want to do no one can stop from doing it. if i have money to buying a house then i definetly buy rather then renting it is more stress free and also no need to vary about the landlord. in renting landlord can give you notice any time for leaving the rental place so you have no option rather than leaving that renting have so many negative situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is limited. The ideas are presented in a somewhat informal, conversational tone, and the arguments regarding the benefits of ownership (e.g., financial gain, freedom from landlord rules) are repetitive and lack depth. The essay lacks a formal structure, such as an introduction or conclusion, which prevents a clear, academic presentation of the position. While the writer clearly states that they believe home ownership is a positive situation, the supporting points are underdeveloped and lack the necessary complexity for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks clear paragraphing, appearing as a single block of text. This makes the progression of ideas difficult to follow. There is a lack of cohesive devices; the sentences are often linked by simple conjunctions or run-on structures, such as 'if you owning a home that will best option because you don't need to vary about any place to live'. The logical flow is hindered by the absence of transition words or logical connectors, making the relationship between ideas mechanical and sometimes confusing. The lack of clear structure significantly impacts the overall coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The writer relies on basic, everyday language, such as 'making money', 'best option', and 'no restrictions'. There are several instances of word-choice errors and misuse of terms, such as 'vary' instead of 'worry', and 'Electricity, Hydro bills' which is slightly informal. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express more complex ideas or to demonstrate precision. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of variety and the presence of errors in collocation and word choice restrict the score to the lower end of the scale.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede readability. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'if you owning a home', and incorrect verb forms, such as 'if i have money to buying a house'. Punctuation is largely absent, with many run-on sentences and a lack of capitalization. The sentence structures are predominantly simple or poorly constructed complex sentences. While the writer attempts to express complex thoughts, the lack of control over basic grammar and the high frequency of errors mean that the reader must work hard to interpret the intended meaning.
