IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
There has been a controversy going on whether some origins retain a house rather than hiring one is crucial for people. However, I am of the opinion that is beneficial in terms of financial security and stability for families.
One of the major merits of this trend is the sense of ownership and freedom. This is due to the fact that people can renovate or decorate their homes according to their preferences. They have more control over their environment. They can do various things at late night like listening music at loud voice and watching movies. In older days, people did not have own houses, while today they can achieve success . As a result, people help in living our life freely and happily.
Another positive outcome of this trend is the future inheritance. To elaborate, a house can be passed on to children or other family members. This can provide financial support for future generations. A survey conducted by social welfare department has provided concrete evidence by highlighting that 60% people favour using rent house due to its favour. Therefore, it brings benefits for people and society.
To conclude, the trend of owning houses has owning houses has numerous advantages for people and society . It would be better for the every one if this trend gets more promotion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for home ownership and expressing a clear opinion. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. The ideas, such as 'freedom' and 'inheritance', are introduced but not fully extended. Furthermore, the supporting evidence regarding a 'social welfare department' survey is vague and lacks logical connection to the argument. Because the response is under-length and the ideas are somewhat underdeveloped, it does not fully meet the requirements for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a basic attempt at logical progression. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the awkward transition 'In older days, people did not have own houses'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the concluding sentence is repetitive ('has owning houses has'). While the overall structure is discernible, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the repetitive nature of the phrasing hinder the flow of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'origins retain a house' (likely meaning 'people own a house') and 'hiring one' (instead of 'renting'). The phrase 'listening music at loud voice' is also non-idiomatic. The vocabulary is repetitive, and the student struggles to use less common lexical items accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical errors, such as 'There has been a controversy going on whether some origins retain a house rather than hiring one is crucial'. Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent throughout the text. Punctuation is also problematic, with unnecessary spaces before punctuation marks. The frequency of these errors occasionally impedes the reader's understanding.
