IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some countries, possessing a property rather than leasing one is extremely essential for people. I believe it is the mindset of the society, which influences one to think this way. This leads to a negative situation because a person then dwells in a negative space if he is not able to achieve this belief financially.
In today's world, only a person who owns a home is considered successful by the society. They are not concerned with the fact that a person works hard to earn a living and pay numerous bills. Expenditure on self is quite high, let alone a person also taking care of his family. Taking in account these factors, an average salary earner is only able to rent a home generally. People get demotivated and start having negative thoughts. That's why depression and anxiety are becoming so common these days. Although the end goal is always owning a home, from my perspective, the person is working hard enough and is successful in fulfilling his duties.
Considering a scenario in which a person earns well enough but may not consider owning a home. For example, the person may believe in renting several properties at different intervals of time. As a result, he is able to explore various locations with the exquisite chance to stay there as well.
In conclusion, if a person is self-confident and stops thinking of what the society thinks of him, success comes chasing away. If owning a home is important, work hard and achieve it, only because you want that and not the society. Lastly, if you are a traveler and prefer convenience over being stagnant, then again it is your choice.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the importance of home ownership and the evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The explanation regarding societal pressure is clear, but the argument could be more nuanced. For instance, the discussion on renting as a lifestyle choice is a good point, but it is not fully connected back to the broader societal context of home ownership. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis remains at a surface level, which prevents it from reaching the higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In today's world', 'Although', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as the shift between the second and third paragraphs. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved to create a more natural progression of ideas. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some relevant terms like 'stagnant', 'exquisite', and 'demotivated'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural collocation or word choice, such as 'possessing a property' (owning a home is more idiomatic) and 'success comes chasing away' (which is not a standard English idiom). While the range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, there is a lack of more sophisticated or precise academic vocabulary that would be required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Taking in account these factors' (should be 'Taking into account') and 'the society' (often used without 'the' in this context). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. You have attempted some complex structures, but the control is inconsistent. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles and prepositions to achieve greater accuracy in your complex sentences.
