IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Some people argued that, having a personal house instead of renting one is vital for individuals. Although this trend has some potential drawbacks, I believe that is largely a positive development because it is a financial investment and it provide greater stability and security.
The primary reason why I consider this to be a positive development is that it many citizens consider this as a long-term expenditure. This is because investment on home gives higher value and money in the future. For example several youngster purchase their own house in early age as an future asset because they it gives double or triple value in next 20 or 30 years. As a result they get valuable money in the future.
Another significant benefit of this development is that, it gives better security compared to give a rent for every month for living. In other words there some difficulities about renting such as homeowner increase the house rent whenever they want and also if householder want to sell their house so that time they renters have to move and they from this. For instance families who have their own house can stay in the same city for many years without worriying about rents. Consequently they live happily

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for home ownership and the writer's opinion. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the ideas are relevant, they are under-developed due to the brevity. The position is clear, but the lack of sufficient length prevents a more thorough exploration of the topic, which is required for a higher band score. To improve, you must expand your supporting points with more detailed explanations and additional examples.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a basic logical progression. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate, such as 'so that time they renters have to move and they from this'. The transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt, and the referencing is not always clear. Improving the flow between sentences using a wider variety of linking words would help the reader follow your argument more smoothly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks range and precision. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'valuable money' instead of 'financial gain' or 'capital appreciation', and 'give a rent' instead of 'paying rent'. The repetition of basic terms like 'house' and 'money' limits the sophistication of the writing. You should focus on learning collocations related to finance and housing to express your ideas more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'Some people argued that, having a personal house...' (incorrect comma usage), 'it many citizens consider' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'if householder want to sell' (missing article). While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve accuracy.
