IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people argued that, having a personal house instead of renting one is vital for individuals. Although this trend has some potential drawbacks, I believe that is largely a positive development because it is a financial investment and it provide greater stability and security.

The primary reason why I consider this to be a positive development is that it many citizens consider this as a long-term expenditure. This is because investment on home gives higher value and money in the future. For example several youngster purchase their own house in a early age as an future asset because they it gives double or triple value in next 20 or 30 years. As a result they get valuable money in the future.

Another significant benefit of this development is that, it gives better security compared to give a rent for every month for living. In other words there some difficulities about renting such as homeowner increase the house rent whenever they want and also if householder want to sell their house so that time they renters have to move and they from this. For instance families who have their own house can stay in the same city for many years without worriying about rents. Consequently they live happily with their families and friends.

In conclusion, although owning a home have certain drawbacks, I believe that is largely positive development because it provides offers better stability and it enhance overall financial wealth. Overall this trend boosts peoples' quality of life and also gives lifelong benifit.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have addressed both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing your opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. Your position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention financial investment and stability, the arguments could be more thoroughly supported with deeper analysis or more nuanced examples. The explanation of why renting is difficult is a good start, but it lacks a sophisticated exploration of the socio-economic implications. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully expanded rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'The primary reason', 'Another significant benefit', and 'In conclusion', which help the reader follow your argument. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'and they from this' in the second paragraph, which creates confusion. Additionally, some sentences are disjointed, and the flow between ideas could be smoother. Improving your use of transition words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this development') is always precise will help improve the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'financial investment', 'asset', and 'stability'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'give a rent' instead of 'pay rent', 'householder' used incorrectly to mean 'landlord', and 'valuable money'. There are also minor spelling errors like 'benifit' and 'worriying'. To improve, focus on learning common collocations related to housing and finance and proofread carefully to avoid basic spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('owning a home have', 'it provide'), incorrect article usage ('in a early age'), and awkward phrasing ('Some people argued that, having a personal house...'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To reach a higher band, you should work on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles and prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring they are error-free will also be beneficial.
