IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In many countires renting home is one of the major stress or problem of peoples .many peoples bought thier own home but some persons prefers to pay rent for home . in my opinion both has positive or negative situation so i will dicuss both of these.

some peoples lived in rental home becasue they dont have enough money to bought new house however some indiviuals lived in rental house because they have to travelled from one place to another place .for example my uncle was a police officer who lived in rantal home because when his duty was transfered from one city to another he might not need an enough money to bought a new home .

but on other hand a person who owned a home will not need enough money to pay rent . he spent his money on other purposes.

in many countries owning a home is vey important because they think that they will save their money in this way that they spent thier money on other purposes instead of paying rent .some people who are unemploy will not neend money to pay rent because they own a house .

In my opinion owning a home is positive situation because we have not to pay rent for our whole life.

To conclude, rental house is better when we have not enough money to buy a new home but if we are able to buy a home than we have not to live in rantal home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is limited. The arguments regarding financial stability and job mobility are relevant but remain superficial. For instance, the point about unemployment is unclear and lacks logical support. The position is stated in the introduction and conclusion, but the supporting arguments are repetitive and lack the depth required for a higher band. To improve, you should expand on your points with specific examples or logical reasoning rather than repeating the same ideas about saving money.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow is weak. While there is an attempt to use cohesive devices like 'however', 'for example', and 'in conclusion', they are often used mechanically or incorrectly. The transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt, making the progression of the argument difficult to follow. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'In many countries owning a home is very important because they think...', where the pronoun 'they' does not clearly refer back to a specific noun. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear, singular focus will enhance coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. You frequently use basic terms like 'money', 'home', and 'house'. There are also several spelling errors, such as 'countires', 'thier', 'peoples', and 'rantal', which occur throughout the text. While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas or demonstrate precision. To achieve a higher score, you should focus on learning collocations (e.g., 'financial burden' instead of 'major stress') and synonyms to avoid repeating the same words in every sentence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and article usage (e.g., 'some peoples lived', 'he might not need an enough money to bought'). The misuse of infinitives and past tense forms (e.g., 'to bought', 'duty was transfered') significantly impacts the accuracy of the writing. While the meaning is usually understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the text from reaching a higher band. You should practice sentence construction and review basic rules regarding verb forms and plurals.
