IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Shelter is very important for surviving in different conditions of life. It is considered that in some countries own home for living is beneficial than living in the house for which we pay rent every month. According to my mind it is right that living in our own home is better than living in the home of rent. I will describe my reasons in details.

There are many reasons behind this that living in our own home is better. The first and main is that,it does not demands any money after any month. On the other hand the main loss of rental home is that we pay its rent every month. The second reason is that the demand of houses is is increasing day by day and the cost of homes are also increasing due to increasing of their demands. After of all due to these reasons, the rents of houses are also increasing that a poor man cannot able to pay easily.Another loss of rental home is that if a person does not pay rent in time he will not able to stay in the home

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 186 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the essay addresses the prompt by identifying reasons for home ownership and offering a personal opinion, the arguments are underdeveloped and lack depth. The discussion on why ownership is preferred is repetitive, focusing primarily on financial aspects without exploring social or psychological factors. Furthermore, the essay ends abruptly, failing to provide a conclusion or a balanced discussion on whether the situation is positive or negative, which is a core requirement of the prompt. Consequently, the response is incomplete and lacks the necessary extension required for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into short paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is limited. While there is an attempt to use transition words like 'The first and main' and 'On the other hand', the flow is often mechanical and sometimes awkward. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the lack of a proper conclusion disrupts the overall coherence of the piece. Paragraphing is present but the content within the paragraphs is sparse, making the logical development of the argument difficult to follow. To improve, you should focus on linking sentences more fluidly and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence followed by supporting details.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits the ability to express complex ideas. Phrases such as 'living in our own home' and 'rental home' are used frequently. There are also issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'does not demands any money' and 'main loss of rental home'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, you should aim to incorporate more precise terminology related to housing, economics, and social trends, and work on using collocations more accurately to convey your meaning with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. Examples include 'it does not demands any money', 'the cost of homes are also increasing', and 'a poor man cannot able to pay'. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. To improve, you need to focus on subject-verb agreement, the correct use of modal verbs, and basic sentence construction. Practicing the use of complex structures, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, will also help improve your grammatical range.
