IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is considered important. This can mainly be because people might want to secure their future or want financial stability or security. In my opinion, owning a house is a positive situation, but though it can be difficult or an issue for people who cannot afford a house.
There are several reasons for buying a house. Firstly people who want to live in their own house without paying rents every month as owning your own house can save a lot of amount for future. Also people who live in rent has no guarantee when the owner might ask them to leave, while in the case of owning a house this can never happen. Secondly, in your own house you can live as per your choice you won't have to think before painting the house, using nails on the wall and most importantly you can decorate or do interior designing as per your own choice. But in the case of rented apartment you can not do as you wish.
I believe this can be considered as a positive situation because after owning a house people have a secure and stable future rather than having tensions about their future. After retirement older age can rest instead of taking pressure about where they would live after their retirement. For example, a person living in their own house at the age of 65 without any tension about spending money on rent but compared to his friend of the same age living in a rented apartment who have to ask money from his child for the rent his needs to pay.
In conclusion, owning a house is definitely a positive situation rather than taking stress about future. But people who can't afford a house might face problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as financial security and personal freedom. However, the development is somewhat limited. The argument regarding the 'positive' nature of home ownership is clear, but the counter-argument regarding affordability is mentioned only briefly in the introduction and conclusion without being fully explored in a body paragraph. To reach a higher band, the student should provide more depth to the discussion of the negative aspects or the challenges of home ownership to provide a more balanced view.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. The use of cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Also', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' helps guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is slightly unclear, such as the sentence 'After retirement older age can rest', which lacks a clear subject. Additionally, the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the overall progression of ideas would benefit from more sophisticated linking words and better control over referencing to avoid repetition.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is frequent repetition of basic terms like 'house', 'rent', and 'future'. Phrases such as 'save a lot of amount' and 'taking pressure about' are unnatural and indicate a limited grasp of collocation. While the student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is restricted. To improve, the student should focus on using more varied synonyms and idiomatic collocations related to finance and housing, and ensure that word choices are more precise to convey their meaning effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'people who live in rent has no guarantee' (subject-verb agreement error), 'he needs to pay' (should be 'he needs to pay for'), and 'compared to his friend... who have to ask' (should be 'has to ask'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the control over complex sentences is inconsistent. The student needs to focus on subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and ensuring that complex sentence structures are grammatically sound.
