IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's globarised world, the concern regarding a population is a big challenge for most of the countries. In spefic nations like India,it is necessary having your own house because of social factor and other various issues while in countires like Canada,it is hard to buy house due to increased cost so most of the population prefer to live in a rented house.I believe that it depands on an individual's situation as a positive and negative impact.

Firstly, there is a need of ownig a house in such countries like India, China etc.The initial reason is rise in population day by day. In India, public is increasing with time. In addition, social factor is also contributing here. People of India believe more in living with joint families. This situation directly supports the need of buying a home because rents of house are increasing due to area specifications and willingness of gediatrics to live in joint families.

Secondly,it is crucial for owning a home for designing places according to your own choices.Tredy house patterns increase the willingness of people for buying a house. Moreover, own house leads to a good impression of an individual. For example,if family of bride comes to see grrom's house,id the house of groom is rentted house, the family of bride will judge by this factor so owning a house have impact on an individual's personal life.

i personally believe that it is necessary of owning a house because there are several benefits and positive impacts of it on an individual's personal and professional life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is uneven. While the reasons regarding population growth and social factors are mentioned, they are not fully explored or supported with clear logic. The discussion on whether this is positive or negative is underdeveloped; you mention it is 'necessary' but do not clearly weigh the pros and cons to form a cohesive argument. The introduction is somewhat vague, and the conclusion does not adequately summarize the main points or reinforce your position clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is often mechanical. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly', but the transitions between sentences within paragraphs are sometimes abrupt. For example, the jump from population growth to 'social factors' in the second paragraph lacks a smooth logical bridge. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'This situation directly supports the need...', where the antecedent is ambiguous. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression of ideas needs to be more refined to ensure the reader can follow your argument without effort.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are several spelling errors ('globarised', 'spefic', 'countires', 'depands', 'ownig', 'gediatrics', 'Tredy', 'grrom', 'rentted') and awkward collocations like 'willingness of gediatrics'. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing. To improve, you should focus on using more sophisticated vocabulary related to housing and social trends, and ensure that your spelling is accurate, as frequent errors can distract the reader and impede the flow of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that affect clarity. Issues include missing articles ('it is necessary having your own house'), incorrect verb forms ('it is crucial for owning a home'), and punctuation errors (missing spaces after commas and periods). Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are also inconsistent. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. You should focus on proofreading for basic sentence structure and article usage.
