IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Home is a very important and has sentimental value in human life, as we can see in today's world and from history it is also evident that home has always significant value in human life. I think it is beacuse that house is place where one feels safe, relax and enjoys his life achievments with his family. In today's world we see that in different countries owning a home is more important than renting, in this essay i will discuss why this has significant value and some positive and negative points of this and will come to a conclusion.

First of all in almost every country people prefer to buy home instead of buying if they have buying power. Owning a home makes human being mentally satisfied and it has psycological and financial reasons as well. some of financial reasons are that you don't have to pay rent every month and also don't need to change places time to time on landlord's demand.

I will discuss some negative aspects first, many people don't have money to buy residence, so they take loans from banks which forces them to lend money at high interests rate which can be very stressful and one needs to pay alot back as compared to the actual value of the house and also this stress can cause health problems.

On the other side, having own home is of huge importance for people and it is also good for them as they can do whatever they want with their home, for instance they can make changes in design and install new things or make new arrangments in their home as they please.

In conclusion, i would say if people can afford to buy homes without too much interest on money and its not affecting other more important things in life, they should buy their own homes as it gives freedom and mental satisfaction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for the importance of home ownership and providing a clear opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the discussion on financial stress is brief, and the 'positive' side could be more deeply explored beyond simple home modifications. The position is consistent, but the arguments lack the depth required for a higher band. To improve, you should aim to expand your supporting points with more specific examples or logical consequences, ensuring that each paragraph fully explores the implications of your stated position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'First of all', 'On the other side', 'In conclusion'). Additionally, some transitions between sentences are abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the link between 'buying power' and 'mentally satisfied' could be more explicitly connected. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision expected at higher levels. You rely on common, repetitive terms like 'important', 'good', and 'things'. While you attempt some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'financial reasons' and 'psychological', there are errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'lend money at high interests rate' (should be 'borrow') and 'change places time to time'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated synonyms and precise collocations to express your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a place', 'the landlord'), subject-verb agreement ('house is place'), and punctuation. Some sentences are run-on or lack necessary commas, which affects readability. For example, 'I think it is beacuse that house is place where one feels safe, relax and enjoys his life achievments' contains multiple errors. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct article usage and ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated accurately.
