In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
There is an ongoing debate about whether having a own house is way significant rather than keeping a renting house. In this essay I will provide all benefits of owning a house.
The one of the major advantage of having a house is that a person do not need to pay a regularly for his living. However, residential property ownership is something that a person can have it for lifetime only paying it for once. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 99 words. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. The essay introduces the topic but fails to explore the 'why' behind the importance of home ownership in depth, and it completely neglects the second part of the prompt, which asks for an opinion on whether this situation is positive or negative. The ideas presented are underdeveloped and lack the necessary support or examples required for an academic response. To improve, you must ensure all parts of the prompt are answered and provide sufficient detail to meet the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into two short paragraphs, which is a basic attempt at structure. However, the progression of ideas is limited due to the brevity of the text. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences and ideas effectively. For instance, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraph is abrupt. While there is a basic attempt to use 'However' and 'As well as', these are used mechanically and do not create a smooth flow of information. To improve, focus on using a wider range of linking words and ensure each paragraph has a clear, central topic sentence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. Phrases such as 'having a own house' and 'renting house' are grammatically incorrect and demonstrate a lack of precision. There is little attempt to use less common or academic vocabulary. The word choice is basic, and there are noticeable errors in collocation, such as 'pay a regularly' and 'get high in future'. To improve, you should aim to use more precise terminology related to housing and finance, such as 'mortgage', 'financial security', or 'capital appreciation', and focus on correct word forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'having a own house', 'a person do not need', and 'buying an house'. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with very few attempts at complex sentences. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, and there are errors with articles ('a own house', 'an house'). The lack of control over basic grammar significantly limits the quality of the writing. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and practicing the construction of complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions.
