IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In many regions buying a house is an important option than renting a house. From my perspective it is a positive situation cause it helps people to get financial safety, freedom and control.
To start with, buying your new house is a bestest decision ever. A person who buy their own house they got financial security such as it is a great source of asset, after investing on house we are not only going to stay there but also the price of the land will going to increase every year. If we ever need money we can sell it and could able to manage money. For older people a house is the most crucial thing cause after retirement they can stay there.
The second reason is if we buy a house we can live their freely. we do not need to give any explanation to anyone, for instance a house owner can through any party anytime on the other people who rent a house, they need to ask for permission from landlord before making any arrangements. Thirdly, people who have their own house the have full control over their house. they can make any kind of change or renovation at home according to their choice at any time. Finally, house owners can easily follow their cultural and religious activities on their own demand which is quite impossible for people who did not buy house.
In conclusion, according to above discussion investing on a house is not only benificial for our economic growth but also give us freedom to practice our cultural and religious activities which are not accessable in a rented house.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing a clear opinion that it is a positive situation. The ideas are relevant, focusing on financial security, personal freedom, and control. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat simplistic. For instance, the point about 'cultural and religious activities' is mentioned but not sufficiently explained or exemplified. The position is clear throughout, but the essay would benefit from more sophisticated arguments and a deeper exploration of the implications of home ownership to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. There is a basic attempt at using cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'The second reason', and 'In conclusion'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, there are issues with referencing and sentence-level cohesion; for example, the transition between the idea of financial security and the mention of older people is abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of informal or imprecise word choices, such as 'bestest' (which is non-standard) and 'through any party' (should be 'throw'). The student relies on basic vocabulary like 'good', 'money', and 'house'. While the meaning is clear, there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic language. To improve, the student should focus on using more academic collocations and precise terminology related to finance and property.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('A person who buy their own house'), incorrect verb forms ('will going to increase'), and punctuation errors (missing commas and run-on sentences). The use of articles is also inconsistent. While the student attempts complex structures, they are often faulty. A greater focus on basic grammatical accuracy and proofreading for common errors would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
