IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, owning one's home is highly prioritized and crutial over renting, all over the world. I have a mixed opinion regarding this situation as it can lead to oth positive and negative outcomes in people's life. I will support my stance further in the essay with relevant examples.

On one hand, having or owning a home provides lifelong security to people. As living in renting home costs a lot due to continuous increase in rent and you won't be able to do any savings in this situation, Also it has become our social standard of living a good life if you own a house, thus in this case it is rightly prioritized. For example, if you own your home, you can anytime be the landlord as well and can earn from your home.

On the other hand, if this demand rises up enormously, it can cause people to get in debt if they only chase the idea of owning home. Also renting gives the benefit of adjusting or easily moving in the neighbourhood of your liking when the situations demand a change. Also owning home can cause the market to buble up leading to inflation and rising of rates of homes.

To sum up, owning a home can provide with financial security and investment but it also comes with certain risks and downsides. The government should make a move in this area and try to come up with a strategy to control inflating rates of homes and debt issues of people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you mention financial security and social status as reasons, the arguments remain brief. The discussion on the negative aspects, such as debt and market inflation, is relevant but lacks depth. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported by a more detailed explanation or a concrete example. For instance, explaining how the 'social standard' specifically influences behavior would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' to signal shifts in perspective. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the transition between the discussion of rent and social standards in the second paragraph is a bit disjointed. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your ideas, such as 'prioritized', 'financial security', and 'inflation'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'crutial' (crucial), 'oth' (both), and 'buble' (bubble). Additionally, some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'renting home' instead of 'rented accommodation' or 'renting'. To improve, focus on mastering the spelling of common academic terms and pay closer attention to collocations to ensure your language sounds more natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'you won't be able to do any savings' (make any savings) and 'owning home' (owning a home). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and missing articles. The errors do not significantly impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
