IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the contemporary world, owning a home rather than looking for rental house in few regions is highly prioritised by the citizens. The preference is primarily driven by the desire for long-term financial security and a sense of stability. I believe that its a highly positive trait in a person as it fosters both personal wealth and stronger communities.

To begin with, owning a home is highly prioritised by the people because it provides a sense of stability in a person's life where they can feel more independent and loses their fear of uncertainty of a rental home. Moreover, personal home also acts as an investment which will appreciate in the future and can generate profits. Furthermore, the property also generates social status in society and can provide a sense of relevancy to the people living in it.

This situation can be categorised as positive because it encourages financial discipline and fosters stable neighbourhoods. Ona a personal level, committing to mortgage forces people to save money and make consistent, long-term habit of investments. Additionally, the habit of paying these instalments on time significantly improves an individual's credit score, which is beneficial for their overall financial health. On a broader scale, homeowners tend to put down more their local area, which ultimately leads to safer. and closely-knit communities.

To conclude, I firmly believe that, purchasing house is a crucial milestone in an individual's life, as it provides them with both long-term financial independence and the foundation for healthier, closely-knit communities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the essay falls just short of the 250-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the development of ideas. While the arguments regarding financial security and community stability are relevant, they could have been expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis to fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7. The position is clear throughout, but the brevity limits the depth of the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Moreover,' and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with mechanical flow, such as the sentence 'Ona a personal level,' which contains a typo and slightly awkward phrasing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the reasons for ownership from the evaluation of the situation. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, though the transitions could be more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'financial security,' 'financial discipline,' and 'credit score.' However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'loses their fear of uncertainty' (should be 'loses the fear of uncertainty') and 'relevancy to the people' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). The range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use complex sentences, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'its a highly positive trait' (missing apostrophe in 'it's'), 'purchasing house' (missing article 'a'), and 'leads to safer. and closely-knit' (incorrect punctuation). Additionally, 'Ona a personal level' contains a spelling error. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to proofreading for articles and punctuation would improve your accuracy.
