IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the modern era, the topic of owning a home rather than renting one is widely discussed across the world. There are various opinions surrounding this issue, and it brings both economic challenges and social benefits to our society.

To begin with, there are several key reasons why people hold this perspective and prefer buying property over renting. The primary factor behind this trend is that purchasing a house provides long-term financial security and freedom from monthly rental payments, which directly impacts daily family life. For instance, most people prefer to invest their hard-earned money into real estate so they do not have to worry about shifting houses frequently, dealing with strict landlords, or facing unexpected increases in monthly rent.

Furthermore, we must also consider the overall impact of this situation. Another major aspect to look at is that homeownership is largely a positive development because it builds personal wealth, guarantees a secure future for children, and gives people a deep sense of stability and community status, leading to noticeable positive changes in society. For example, permanent homeowners can freely renovate, paint, and design their living spaces according to their personal needs and preferences without needing any permission from a landlord.

In conclusion, although there are mixed views on this matter regarding initial costs, it is clear that having one's own property is extremely beneficial for long-term financial and emotional stability. Therefore, governments and financial institutions should support citizens through easy loans so that more people can achieve their dream of owning a home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why homeownership is important and providing a clear opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the freedom to renovate and the avoidance of strict landlords. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief; while the points are clear, they could be expanded with more depth or nuanced analysis to reach a higher band. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main argument and provides a logical recommendation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is smooth. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the development of the argument well, making the text easy to read and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'financial security', 'real estate', and 'long-term financial and emotional stability'. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys meaning clearly, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or idiomatic usage that would characterize a higher band. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the language used is natural and fits the academic context of the essay well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. The student successfully employs complex structures, such as 'so they do not have to worry about...' and 'although there are mixed views...'. While the grammatical range is solid, it does not show the full flexibility or the wide variety of complex structures required for the highest bands. However, the errors are rare and do not impede communication at all.
