IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is an undeniable fact that home plays an important role in an individual lives. In many countries, owning a home is considered a major life goal, while renting is often seen as a temporary arrangement. I believe that owing a home is more beneficial then renting one.
One of the main reasons people value home ownership is that they get security and stability. Unlike tenants, homeowners do not have to worry about sudden rent increases or being asked to leave the property by a landlord. This is especially important for families with children, who prefer a stable environment where they can build long-term relationships within their community. In addition, owning a home is often regarded as a symbol of financial success and social status in many cultures. As a result, people may feel proud of achieving their dream home.
Homeowners are also more likely to maintain their properties and contribute to the development of their local communities. However, excessive pressure to buy a house can have negative consequences. Some people take on large loans that are difficult to repay, leading to financial stress. In areas where property prices are extremely high, the desire to own a home may also reduce people's flexibility to move for better education or job opportunities. In large cities it is hard to find a perfect home, so people prefer to rent the house, as a result they can live in a house which is according to their choice. In addition, students rent house when they go for abroad studies as they do not fund to buy a house there.
In conclusion, people often prefer owning a home because it offers security, social recognition, and financial advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all parts of the prompt by explaining why home ownership is important and providing a balanced view on whether it is a positive or negative situation. Your position is clear from the introduction. However, the development of your ideas could be more consistent. For instance, the transition in the third paragraph is slightly abrupt, as you shift from the benefits of maintenance to the negative consequences of high costs. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed argument rather than introducing multiple disparate points. Overall, your response is relevant and directly answers the question.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
Your essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'As a result,' and 'However' to link your ideas. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. For example, the shift to the topic of students renting abroad in the third paragraph lacks a smooth connection to the previous point about financial stress. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'temporary arrangement,' 'financial success,' and 'social status' effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'they do not fund to buy a house,' which should be 'they do not have the funds to buy a house.' While you successfully communicate your ideas, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'individual lives' (should be 'individual's life'), 'owing a home' (should be 'owning'), and 'rent house' (should be 'rent a house'). Additionally, there is a minor error in 'beneficial then renting' (should be 'beneficial than renting'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on proofreading for articles, pluralization, and comparative structures, and aim to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences.
