IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD, RENTING A HOME IS LESS PREFERABLE THAN PURCHASING BY MANY PEOPLE FOR THEIR PERSONAL REASON AS JOB POSTING, TRANSFER FOR FAMILY ISSUE AND OTHER SITUATIONAL REASON. IN MY OPINION, THIS MAY IMPACT A POSITIVE EFFECT ON PERSONAL PREFERENCE
FIRSTLY, MANY PEOPLE FIND IT EASIER TO RENT A HOME ACCORDING TO THEIR REQUIREMENT THOUGH IT MAY FIND QUITE EXPENSIVE PURCHASING IT. BESIDES THIS, THEY MAY HAVE TO MOVE TO OTHER PLACES BECAUSE OF THEIR NEW JOB AND CHILDREN EDUCATION PURPOSE, WHILE MOVING TO NEARBY PLACES FIND EASIER THAN LEAVING OWN HOME. SECONDLY, ACCESSING FACILITY ACCORDING TO PERSONAL REQUIREMENT MAY REQUIRE LESS AMOUNT TO PAY BY RENTING THAN REFUBRISHING OWN HOME.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it is only 125 words long. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the prompt asks for reasons why home ownership is important and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative, the essay is incomplete and stops abruptly mid-sentence. The arguments provided regarding job transfers and financial considerations are relevant but remain underdeveloped due to the lack of length. To improve, you must ensure you fully address all parts of the prompt and provide sufficient supporting evidence and examples to meet the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay shows some attempt at logical organization through the use of transition signals like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly'. However, the abrupt ending and the very limited length make it impossible to demonstrate a clear overall progression of ideas or effective paragraphing. The text lacks a proper introduction and conclusion, which are essential for a coherent response. To improve, focus on structuring your essay with a clear introduction, distinct body paragraphs that each develop a single main idea, and a concluding summary.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'job posting' instead of 'job relocation' and 'refubrishing' (spelling error). The range of vocabulary is limited, which restricts your ability to express complex ideas precisely. To improve, try to incorporate a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary related to housing, finance, and lifestyle. Focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that you proofread your work to avoid simple spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For example, 'this may impact a positive effect' is an incorrect collocation, and 'moving to nearby places find easier' is grammatically incorrect. Punctuation is also inconsistent, and the use of all-caps makes the text difficult to read. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and sentence construction. Practice writing complete, error-free sentences before attempting more complex structures.
