IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays , investing money in purchasing own land becomes very essential in compared to have a rental property. However, there could be many possible reasons behind it. In my perspective, it has more advantages which I will discuss in the forthcoming paragraphs.

To commence with, owing property leads to a sense of responsibility and brings maturity in a person. To simplify it, a person with own land becomes financially independent if he invest in something in productive aspect . To be persistent with that , pupils start saving their money rather than reckless expenditure. For an instance, owning a land helps the individual to give an easy and peaceful life to their family ahead. The insecurities and carrier stress automatically decreased with one big investment. Hence, it is a positive initiative by every individual for a successful future

Furthermore, purchasing residential property helps the person to increase his economic values too. To explicate it, renting apartments generally give nothing in return despite the fact it is cheap. On the other side, investing money on mortgages will lead to a freedom in the future. Additionally, it is very convenient as a economic point of view. Therefore, it also helps the people from recessions and pandemics as they have a own land. They can use their home as an asset to invest in their buisness in the future.

To wrap up, it is undeniable that renting property is affordable but owning a land is equally important. As this helps in the overall growth of individual cognitive and emotional stability. Moreover, it provides a freedom from debts in the future too.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the reasons for the importance of home ownership and the writer's opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The position is clear from the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the argument regarding 'economic values' and 'recessions' is mentioned but not fully explained or supported with concrete logic. The term 'pupils' is used incorrectly to refer to adults or individuals, which slightly weakens the clarity of the argument. To reach a higher band, the writer should provide more detailed examples and ensure the logical flow between the reasons and the conclusion is more robust.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'To wrap up', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'To be persistent with that' and 'To simplify it'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'it is a positive initiative by every individual', where the antecedent of 'it' is ambiguous. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal flow within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. There are several instances of awkward collocations and word choice errors, such as 'purchasing own land' (should be 'purchasing one's own land'), 'productive aspect' (vague), and 'carrier stress' (likely a misspelling of 'career'). The use of 'pupils' to describe people in general is also inaccurate. While the writer attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'mortgages' and 'recessions', the overall range is limited, and the errors occasionally draw attention to the language rather than the ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including article misuse ('the economic values', 'a own land'), subject-verb agreement issues ('insecurities and carrier stress automatically decreased'), and awkward phrasing ('in compared to have a rental property'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. The writer should focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like pluralization and preposition usage to improve accuracy.
