IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
One section of society believes that buying a house rather than renting one is crucial for individuals, while another section of society opposes this point of view. I believes that owing a home is a positive situation and I will discuss my viewpoints in the upcoming paragraphs.
To commence with, benefits of owing a house. Purchasing a house is a one-time investment because to renting a house people have to pay rent weekly and monthly. Moreover, If a person owns a house he/she can save their money which people usually spend on paying rent to owners and they can utilize that money for other purposes and for future saving.
Apart from this, people can decorate and renovate the house according to their wishes and needs, but on renting a house such facilities are not provided to people. Additionally, people can enjoy their life freely in own house, while on rent house, owners come for inspection for every 2 to 3 months if anything is damaged they charge money from them and some owners do not allow pets in renting house. For example a survey was conducted in the USA which showed that people who have their own house live a better lifestle than renters.
To conclude, there are so many restrictions to living in renting house and people just wasting their money by paying rent and saving nothing for the future. People who have their own house are living a better quality of life and also have some savings for their future incidents.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing a clear opinion that it is a positive situation. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention financial benefits and personal freedom, the arguments are repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the point about 'saving money' is mentioned in both the second and fourth paragraphs without adding new insights. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the societal or psychological implications of home ownership rather than focusing solely on the basic financial aspects. The position is clear throughout, but the supporting evidence, such as the vague reference to a USA survey, lacks specific detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the transition between the financial benefits and the freedom to decorate could be smoother. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes unclear; in the second paragraph, 'they' is used to refer to both the person and the owners, which creates slight ambiguity. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun reference would enhance the overall cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'investment', 'renovate', and 'inspection'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'renting house' instead of 'rented accommodation' or 'a rented house'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'future incidents' (which sounds unnatural; 'future contingencies' or 'emergencies' would be better) and 'lifestle' (spelling error). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repeating basic words like 'house' and 'people'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('I believes') and missing articles ('on renting a house'). Some sentences are also slightly fragmented or run-on, such as 'To commence with, benefits of owing a house.' which lacks a main verb. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage will help you achieve a higher score.
