Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an evaluation of whether this is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention financial security and freedom, the explanations are brief and lack depth. For instance, the point about 'status' is mentioned but not fully explored. The negative aspects are also touched upon, but the argument regarding the 'burden' of maintaining two homes is slightly confusing. To reach a higher band, ensure that each main idea is supported by a clear, well-developed explanation and a specific example that directly relates to the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'However'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'this notion' which is used repeatedly. The transition between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother to improve the overall progression of the argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'important part', 'maintain their status', and 'huge money'. There are also some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'fill the interest rate' instead of 'pay interest' or 'meet interest payments'. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to finance and housing, and focus on using collocations more accurately. Expanding your range of synonyms will help you avoid repeating the same words throughout the essay.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include missing articles ('a home', 'the land price'), subject-verb agreement errors ('price of land rise' instead of 'rises'), and awkward phrasing ('people buy a home them they sell the same house'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for article usage would be highly beneficial.
