IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is undeniable that in several countries, individuals perceive the acquisition of a home as a more desirable option than renting, primarily because they regard home ownership as a significant symbol of status. This phenomenon is largely indicative of a broader societal trend wherein material possessions are increasingly valued as markers of personal success. This essay will outline not only reason but also the negative effect of this notion which will outline in forthcoming fragment with logical conclusion.

To commence with, the deep-rooted desire to own a home stems from both financial and socio-cultural factors. The prime one is that, property is universally viewed as a safe, long-term asset that appreciates over time, shielding individuals from the unpredictable rental market and providing stability during retirement. Secondly, in many societies home ownership is an essential milestone that symbolizes social status, adulthood, and personal success. To explain it, individuals are highly motivated to buy property to secure their financial future and achieve peace of mind.

However, this prevailing attitude is predominately positive because it fosters communal stability and personal wealth accumulation. For instance, when citizens invest in permanent properties, they cultivate stronger roots within their local neighborhood, leading to lower crime rates and better maintenance of public spaces. Furthermore, paying off a mortgage functions as a form of forced savings, rather than expending capital on non-refundable rent. Although the high cost of entry can lock out younger generations or lead to severe debt, the ultimate security of possessing a tangible asset outweighs these systemic challenges.

To conclude, there are several reasons in favor of later point of view such as invest in permanent properties, lower crime rates and better maintenance of public spaces yet according to me owning a home rather than renting is important for better privacy and security and people feel safe at their own home as compared to renting one so there benefits never be neglected at any cost.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, providing reasons for the importance of home ownership and clearly stating a position on whether it is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, particularly the discussion on financial stability and communal benefits. However, the conclusion is slightly repetitive and introduces new, slightly tangential points (privacy and safety) that were not fully explored in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that all arguments are introduced and developed within the body paragraphs rather than the conclusion, and maintain a consistent focus on the core arguments throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the reasons for ownership from the evaluation of the situation. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'However' are used appropriately to guide the reader. There are minor issues with cohesion in the final paragraph, where the sentence structure becomes slightly convoluted and repetitive, making the flow less smooth than in the earlier sections. Overall, the essay is easy to follow, and the relationship between ideas is clear.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and generally precise, allowing for a clear expression of ideas. You demonstrate an ability to use academic collocations such as 'material possessions', 'wealth accumulation', and 'unpredictable rental market'. There are occasional minor errors in word choice, such as 'later point of view' instead of 'the latter point of view' and 'expending capital' which is slightly awkward in this context. The range is adequate for the task, though incorporating more sophisticated, less common lexical items would help elevate the score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There is good control over grammar, and most sentences are clear. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'which will outline in forthcoming fragment' (missing subject/passive voice) and 'there benefits never be neglected' (missing 'their' and a modal verb). Punctuation is generally accurate, but some sentences are slightly clunky. The majority of your writing is error-free, but the occasional slips prevent the essay from reaching the higher band descriptors for accuracy.
