IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 7.5)
In many countries, owning a home is considered more important than renting one. This preference is influenced by cultural values, financial considerations, and the desire for stability. In my opinion, this is generally a positive development, although it can also create some challenges.
One reason why people place great importance on home ownership is that it provides a sense of security. Homeowners do not have to worry about landlords increasing rent or asking them to move out. As a result, families can enjoy a more stable lifestyle and establish stronger connections within their communities. In addition, in many cultures, owning a house is regarded as a symbol of success and social status. People often view it as an important achievement that reflects financial independence and responsibility.
Another factor is the financial benefit associated with property ownership. Unlike rent payments, which provide no long-term return, mortgage payments can be seen as an investment. Property values generally increase over time, allowing homeowners to build wealth and financial security. Furthermore, a house can be passed on to future generations, providing support for family members.
I believe that the emphasis on home ownership is largely positive. It encourages people to save money, plan for the future, and invest in valuable assets. Homeowners are also more likely to maintain their properties and contribute to the development of their local areas. However, excessive pressure to buy a home may lead some people to take on large debts or purchase properties they cannot afford. Despite this drawback, the overall benefits outweigh the disadvantages.
In conclusion, people prefer owning homes because it offers security, social recognition, and financial advantages. Although it may sometimes result in financial pressure, I consider it a positive situation overall because it promotes stability and long-term prosperity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly explain why home ownership is important, citing security, social status, and financial investment as key drivers. Your position that this is a positive development is maintained consistently throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed and supported with logical reasoning, such as the comparison between rent payments and mortgage investments. The conclusion effectively synthesizes your main points. To reach a higher band, you could provide a more nuanced exploration of the 'negative' side mentioned in the prompt, perhaps by discussing the impact of housing bubbles or the lack of mobility that comes with ownership, which would add further depth to your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Unlike', 'Furthermore', and 'However' to link your arguments. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs focusing on distinct reasons, and a summary conclusion. The flow of information is natural, and the reader is never confused about the direction of your argument. The use of referencing is also precise, ensuring that the relationships between ideas remain clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic essay. Phrases like 'financial independence', 'long-term return', and 'valuable assets' show a solid command of topic-specific language. The vocabulary is used accurately and helps to convey your meaning precisely. While the range is sufficient and effective, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common idiomatic expressions to move into the higher band range. However, the current level of lexical control is strong, and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'Although it may sometimes result in financial pressure...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly to support the structure of your arguments. You demonstrate control over both simple and complex forms, which allows for a fluent reading experience. There are no significant grammatical errors that distract the reader, and the overall control of syntax is impressive for this level.
