IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In some countries people prefer to purchase a home instead of acquiring it for monthly or yearly rent. This could be due to uncertainty of losing home when a certain period of agreement is over. Paying rent every month or yearly is also painful.

One of the main reason is the secure future without any thoughts of leaving the house after the agreement period is over. For example in my country people prioritize to own a home instead of acquiring it for rent. Although they are paying rent but they have the thoughts of being thrown out in back of their mind. This is the practice have been experienced in my country if owner is not pleased or rent is late due to any reasonable condition owner can kick you out any time giving a notice. However this is the reason people prefer to own a home.

Additionally, people also have to pay rent from the amount they are earning. Giving your hard earned money to someone is also seems difficult. Instead of renting a property they focus on buying it in this way they can add the rent amount in savings which will be helpful in future needs. For instance people owns a house in place of renting one will use the amount which he have to spend on rent in any other needs like can pay utility bills, can furnished his home, can add much more amenities moreover can save in bank in return of a specific income from the bank.

In my opinion it is positive situation owning a home. You are free from extra stress of dislocating being thrown out any time furthermore the pressure of paying rent when your salary is late or your funds are empty.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response generally addresses the task by discussing the reasons people prefer owning homes over renting. However, the explanation lacks depth and specific examples, making the argument seem underdeveloped. The conclusion only briefly touches on the positive aspect of ownership without fully elaborating on the implications. To improve, the writer should provide clearer examples and a more balanced view on whether this situation is positive or negative, as well as addressing potential drawbacks of home ownership. Overall, a solid attempt but could deepen the analysis for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The structure of the essay follows a logical flow with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the coherence is affected by some awkward phrasing and grammatical errors that disrupt the reader's understanding. Sentences like "the thoughts of being thrown out in back of their mind" can lead to confusion, suggesting a lack of clarity in relation to what is being conveyed. More effective linking phrases and transitions could help clarify the connections between ideas and improve the overall coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical resource shows a limited range of vocabulary with repetitive use of terms like "home" and "rent." Some descriptions could be enhanced with more varied word choices to convey ideas more effectively. Words such as "acquiring" and "furnished" are correct but could be supplemented with alternatives to enrich the response. For instance, using "purchasing" instead of "acquiring" and "equipped" instead of "furnished" may elevate the writing. Repetitive phrases should be replaced with synonyms for a more sophisticated lexical variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

Grammatical accuracy is inconsistent; there are frequent errors that impede clarity, such as in the phrases "the practice have been experienced" and misuse of articles. Sentence structures vary, but some long sentences can be confusing. For example, breaking long sentences into simpler ones could enhance understanding. Inconsistencies and errors can be distracting and impact overall readability. Attention to verb tenses and subject-verb agreement would enhance grammatical accuracy significantly. More complex sentence forms could also help reach higher bands in this category.

Overall feedback

Your essay demonstrates an understanding of the task, as you provide arguments for why people prefer home ownership over renting. However, to achieve a higher band score, focus on developing your ideas more fully and integrating stronger examples. Work on ensuring that your sentences are clear and easy to follow, as grammatical errors and awkward phrasing currently hinder your message. Additionally, make an effort to expand your vocabulary to avoid repetitiveness and convey your ideas more effectively. Practicing essay structure with clearer transitions will also help your writing flow better.
