IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is argued that in many of the countries the very positive situation for people is to have their own home instead of living in a rented house while some some believe that it can be a negative situation. However, I assert to believe that owning a home has more positive effects on the lives of people. In this essay, I will give certain reasons with possible examples for my statement.
The very first advantage of having our own home is that people will feel mentally relaxed. For example, in countries like Pakistan most of the people buy home for them and their families, As a result, they do not need to worry about paying the rent of a house. On the other hand, if they are living in a rented house, they have to pay the rent of living in that house at the end of every month which is very annoying and poor people, who have insufficient income, feel stressed. So, owning a home give them feeling of relaxation. Moreover, they can fulfil other needs of their families.
The other advantage is less chance of migration. By living in a house which a person has bought, there is no need to worry about leaving this house. he can live in that house throughout his life. Furthermore, he is able to change the house according to his own choice, if he does not like the area he can buy another house and go there. On the other side, in a rented house, a person is not sure for what period of time he can live there. It totally depends on the choice of owner of a house.
In conclusion, as I have given my clear points in favor of having our own home so I am inclined to say that it will have positive effects on people of different countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and expressing a clear opinion. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you provide reasons such as mental relaxation and stability, the arguments could be extended with more sophisticated analysis or broader societal context. The position is clear throughout, but the essay relies on somewhat simplistic reasoning. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explored with more depth rather than just stating the advantage. The conclusion is also quite brief and does not effectively summarise the main points discussed in the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to link your points. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For instance, the phrase 'in a rented house' is used multiple times in the third paragraph, which makes the flow feel slightly clunky. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that pronouns or synonyms are used to avoid unnecessary repetition would help improve the overall cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'migration' and 'insufficient income'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic vocabulary. Phrases like 'very annoying' or 'very positive' are quite simplistic. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'very annoying', you could use 'financially burdensome' or 'a source of significant anxiety'. Expanding your vocabulary will help you express your ideas with more nuance and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'most of the people buy home for them' (should be 'buy homes for themselves') and 'owning a home give them feeling' (should be 'gives them a feeling'). There are also minor issues with articles and pluralisation throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to ensure your writing is more accurate and professional.
