IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The most people from various countries prefer that having their own home is necessary rather than hiring a home for living. This situation can be instance for persons. I think this is a positive situation.

In my perspective, owning a home is like someone has some assets for their future because when you have your own home you might be relax from paying rents and you can spend that money on other expenses like electricity bills, grocery, foods, gas bills, home repairings, and e.t.c.

The other positive benefits of owning a home are free from the headache of leaving home in emergency because if you are living on rental home the owner of home can force you anytime to leave home and that can be the worse situation if you are living with your family. On the other hand, buying a home can be expensive but if you are living in hired home since 5 years by paying 350$ per month, it means you have to paid 21000$ for living 5 years in that home, instead you can buy a pretty good home in the same amount.

To conclude, Owning a home is the best strategy for living for living with a family rather than living in rental home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, coming in at 209 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the arguments remain superficial and lack the depth required for a higher band. While the student addresses both parts of the prompt—explaining why home ownership is important and stating that it is a positive situation—the explanation is underdeveloped. The points regarding financial stability and security are relevant but are not expanded upon with sufficient detail or examples to fully satisfy the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition 'The other positive benefits' is a bit abrupt, and the connection between ideas within paragraphs is often weak. The flow of the argument is hindered by the brevity of the text and the lack of sophisticated linking words. While the paragraphing is present, the progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed, making the overall coherence feel basic.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision expected for higher bands. There is frequent repetition of simple terms like 'home' and 'living'. Some word choices are unnatural or incorrect, such as 'hiring a home' (instead of 'renting') and 'home repairings' (which is not standard usage). The phrase 'e.t.c.' is informal and should be avoided in an academic essay. To improve, the student needs to incorporate a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary and focus on accurate collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'The most people from various countries prefer that having their own home' and 'if you are living in hired home since 5 years'. There are also issues with article usage, subject-verb agreement, and tense consistency. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the response from reaching a higher band score.
