IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In many countries, owing a home rather than renting is becoming a key point now because of financial considerations and cultural values. In my opinion, this is a positive situation.

Their are a large number of causes. Firstly, it include financial considerations because many peoples believe that owing a house is a big financial investment. People can use it in near future if need arrives. Secondly, in own house people feel secure than in rented house. They can invest more in there house like replacing lights or fans, decorating home and renovation of house, which is not possible in a rented house because anytime they have to change their home. In addition, people feel secure and comfortable and in our society, owning a home rather than renting is consider that the person is successful in society as well as in his life because home is a big asset which a person can build in his lifetime.

In my opinion, having own home is a positive situation because family members feel safe, secure and comfortable. They do not need to pay rent therefore, they can invest that money somewhere else like in social welfare. This well strengthen their bonds in neighborhood.. It allow them to make changes in their property whenever they want.

However, there are some downsides. Pressure of buying home can cause debts, financial stress and pressure especially on young people who afford high property prices. It can also reduce flexibility.

In conclusion, the strong desire of owning a home rather than renting is due to financial insecurity and growing competition in society. In my opinion, this is a positive situation because it promotes stability and long-term planning but has some draw backs like debts, increasing stress and pressure.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. The ideas are relevant, such as financial security and personal freedom, but they are somewhat under-developed. For instance, the point about 'social welfare' is mentioned but not explained, and the discussion on the downsides is brief. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your arguments with more specific examples or deeper analysis. Your position is clear throughout the essay, which is a strength.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In addition', and 'However'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or repetitive. Additionally, there are instances where the flow between sentences is slightly disjointed, such as the transition between the benefits and the downsides. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are several instances of awkward word choice or minor errors, such as 'owing' instead of 'owning', 'there house' instead of 'their house', and 'is consider' instead of 'is considered'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and ensure you are using the correct word forms. You rely on basic descriptors like 'big' and 'good' frequently, which limits your ability to demonstrate a wider range of lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('it include', 'it allow'), pluralization ('many peoples'), and article usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent in places. These errors do not generally impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring correct verb forms will significantly improve your accuracy.
