IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent years, buying a home has become an increasingly noticeable trend in many societies. Although it may present certain challenges, I consider this to be an overall positive development because of its impact on Building Equity and Property Appreciation.

The most significant advantage of buying a home is that it provides you onwership of that place. You can do what you want to do in your home. This is primarily because you can make your home according to you choice. As a result, you can liver there for a long time. A clear example of this can be seen in city areas, where people are like to buy home with their own prefrence and the size of family .Therefore, this aspect of owning a home can have a particularly positive impact on individuals.

Another important benefit is that property appreciation. One reason for this is that your property worth will increase day by day.Real estate typically increases in value over time. This means that it will provide you a profitable investment. For instance, if you buy your home today, after one year, its net value is increased. Your home value will become double. Consequently, propertty appreciation can contribute considerably to your investment, further strengthening the case for buying a home.

In conclusion, although owning a home is not without its drawbacks, I believe that it represents an overall positive development. The benefits it provides in terms of building equity and property appreciation are likely to have a lasting positive impact on people wealth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing an opinion on whether it is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention 'building equity' and 'property appreciation', the explanations are repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the argument about 'making your home according to your choice' is a valid point, but it is not fully explored in terms of the psychological or social benefits of ownership. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph provides a more nuanced analysis rather than repeating the same basic concepts. The position is clear throughout the essay, which is a strength.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'The most significant advantage', 'Another important benefit', and 'Consequently' are used to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly forced. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences within paragraphs lack smooth connectivity. For example, the transition between the idea of personal choice and living in a home for a long time could be more fluid. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'equity', 'appreciation', and 'profitable investment', which is positive. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'provides you onwership', 'liver there', and 'people are like to buy home'. Additionally, there are spelling errors like 'propertty' and 'prefrence'. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring accurate spelling. The current range is sufficient to convey your meaning, but it does not demonstrate the flexibility needed for a band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'provides you onwership' (missing article/preposition), 'make your home according to you choice' (incorrect pronoun), and 'its net value is increased' (tense usage). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues with spacing and sentence construction. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while focusing on accuracy in subject-verb agreement and articles would be beneficial.
