IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, buying a home has become an increasingly noticeable trend in many societies. Although it may present certain challenges, I consider this to be an overall positive development because of its impact on building equity and property appreciation.

The most significant advantage of buying a home is that it provides you with ownership of the property. You can do what you want in your own home. This is primarily because you can design and modify your home according to your preferences. As a result, you can live there for a long time without worrying about moving to another place. A clear example of this can be seen in urban areas, where people prefer to buy homes according to their preferences and family size. Therefore, this aspect of owning a home can have a particularly positive impact on individuals.

Another important benefit is property appreciation. One reason for this is that the value of your property can increase over time. Real estate typically increases in value over the long term. This means that buying a property can provide a profitable investment opportunity. For instance, if you buy a home today, its market value may increase significantly over the following years. Consequently, property appreciation can contribute considerably to an individual's financial security, further strengthening the case for buying a home.

In conclusion, although owning a home is not without its drawbacks, I believe that it represents an overall positive development. The benefits it provides in terms of building equity and property appreciation are likely to have a lasting positive impact on people's wealth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing a clear opinion on whether it is positive or negative. The position is consistent throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on autonomy and financial investment. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the second paragraph focuses on 'preferences' and 'modifying' the home, which could have been expanded with more specific examples of social or psychological stability. While the arguments are logical, they lack the depth required for a higher band, as the points are somewhat predictable and could be extended further to fully explore the implications of the trend.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, such as 'The most significant advantage of buying a home is that it provides you with ownership'. Cohesive devices like 'As a result', 'Therefore', and 'Consequently' are used effectively to link ideas. However, the transition between sentences can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate. To reach a higher band, the student could use a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses relevant terms such as 'equity', 'property appreciation', 'real estate', and 'financial security'. While the range is adequate, it is not particularly wide or sophisticated. There is some repetition of basic words like 'home' and 'property'. To improve, the student should incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a higher level of control. The current vocabulary is functional and accurate, but it lacks the nuance and flexibility required for a band 8 or above.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The student uses complex sentences effectively, such as 'Although it may present certain challenges, I consider this to be an overall positive development'. Grammar is generally accurate, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the control is good, the range of structures is somewhat limited; the essay relies heavily on standard subject-verb-object patterns. Incorporating more varied clause structures, such as passive voice or inverted conditionals, would help demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
