IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that owning a home than renting one is very crucial for people. This preference can be explained by different financial and social factors. In my view, home ownership creates financial pressure but it is generally a positive development because it provides a long term security and stability,

One major reason is that home ownership provides a sense of security. Homeowners do not have to worry about landlords increasing the rent or asking them to leave the house. This is particular important for the families, as owning the house allows them to create a familiar environment for their children and permitting them to live in a permanent place to live in. Another factor is that owning a house is a symbol of independence and success.

Another crucial factor is financial investment. As prices of the houses increases considerably over time and you can sell your house with substantial profitable amount in the future ,Though, it facilitates house owners with a massive financial security after retirement.

However, owning a house has also disadvantages like it create a mental pressure on leader of home. House owners have to pay a large amount of money on different necessities. For instance, electricity bill, gas bill, and travelling expenses.

In conclusion, people prefer house owning because it provides a long term security, stability, independence and other benefits. It also facilitates children with familiar environment which helps them grow socially and personally.

However, its financial burden and pressure should not be overlooked, I believe the advantages of home ownership makes it positive situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, identifying reasons for home ownership and providing a clear opinion on whether it is a positive or negative situation. The ideas are relevant, covering security, investment, and the challenges of financial pressure. However, the development of these points is somewhat uneven. For instance, the paragraph regarding financial investment is quite brief and lacks depth, while the discussion on the 'leader of home' (head of the household) is slightly underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained with a clear link back to the main argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Another crucial factor' and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical or awkward, such as the transition 'Though, it facilitates house owners'. Additionally, the use of referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the phrase 'leader of home', which sounds unnatural in this context. Improving the variety and sophistication of linking words would help the essay flow more naturally and elevate the score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'financial investment' and 'long term security'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'massive financial security' and 'leader of home', which are not standard English collocations. Furthermore, the phrasing 'sell your house with substantial profitable amount' is slightly awkward. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more precise terminology to convey complex ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('prices of the houses increases') and missing articles ('owning a house has also disadvantages'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma placement before 'Though' and after 'retirement'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
