IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In a number of countries, people prefer buying home instead of renting a house. I believe it is a positive development as it gives a sense of security to people.
Firstly, people who own a house do not have to worry to give rent every month alongwith some extra deposit at the start of renting. In this way, individuals can save a lot of money and they can spend this on educating their children or save this money for future as emergency funds. While people who live in apartments on rent, they have to spend a large proportion of their salary on rent. Dur to this, they will be left with small amount of money for daily needs. For instance, many Pakistani's have their own house, therefore, they save at least 25% of their salary as insurance and they will not have to depend on their children after retirement.
Secondly, when people have their own house, they usually renovate it after every five years and they do not need the permission of landlords as in the case of people living in rented houses. Further, owning a house gives security for future generations. If parents die unfortunately, their children will not homeless and they also have no stress of rent. For example, my uncle owned two houses when he died. His children had a safe home to live without depending on other people.
To conclude, some people consider it essential to own a house rather than renting it because they can save enough money and they have a safe home for their children without the fear of kicking out if they do not have rent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: explaining why home ownership is important and providing a clear opinion on whether it is a positive development. The ideas are relevant, focusing on financial stability and security for future generations. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For example, the explanation of financial benefits is repetitive, and the argument regarding renovation could be more nuanced. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the broader societal implications of home ownership, such as the impact on the housing market or the psychological benefits of stability, rather than focusing primarily on personal financial anecdotes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main arguments. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'Dur to this, they will be left with small amount of money'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow of the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'renovate' and 'insurance', but the range is somewhat limited. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'worry to give rent' (should be 'worry about paying rent') and 'Pakistani's' (should be 'Pakistanis'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing like 'save money' and 'own a house'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' missing before 'rent'), prepositions, and pluralization ('Pakistani's'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'they will not homeless'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures with greater accuracy.
