IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is considered much more crucial for people. While, others believe that it can create a sense of responsibility. This factor can be explained in both positive and negative way.
Owning a home is better option rather than renting one because it provides financial security. Moreover, the head don't need to worry about paying lease at the last of every single month. It is beneficial to have own property since it can be sell on higher rates when its value increases by over time.
On the other hand, owning a property is often consider as a sign financial success and social stability. Even your parents believe that you can manage to buy more property in future. In many societies parents encourages their children to buy a house because property is viewed as a valuable asset that can be passed to future generations.
Another point to consider, the negative situation is that when people own a renting house and they can't spend money on their children. Consequently, they can educate them. In addition, rent also rises with years. Young people can't save money for their future. The time usually spend on paying let and mortgage.
In the final analysis, I believe that it is a positive situation. Owning a home provide financial security, social and cultural stability. However, a pressure of becoming a home owner can be harmful since you have to deal with all the financial problems of the house and the family. Last but not least, people should be free to choose between renting and buying according to their financial circumstances rather than social expectations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether it is positive or negative. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. While the financial benefits are mentioned, the argument regarding the 'negative situation' in the fourth paragraph is confusing and lacks clarity, particularly the claim that people who own a house 'can't spend money on their children.' The position is clear in the conclusion, but the supporting arguments throughout the body paragraphs lack the depth required for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, the transition 'Another point to consider, the negative situation is that...' is awkward. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the second paragraph where 'the head' is used without a clear antecedent. While there is an overall progression, the logical flow between sentences is occasionally disrupted by grammatical errors and imprecise linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range expected at higher levels. There are several instances of awkward collocations and word choice errors, such as 'head don't need to worry' (should be 'homeowners'), 'sell on higher rates' (should be 'sold at higher prices'), and 'paying let' (should be 'rent'). While the meaning is generally conveyed, the limited range of vocabulary and the recurring errors in word choice prevent a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there is a high frequency of grammatical errors. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('parents encourages'), article usage, and tense consistency ('value increases by over time'). Some sentences are difficult to parse due to these errors, such as 'Consequently, they can educate them,' which seems to contradict the intended meaning of the paragraph. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable throughout the text.
