IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people. Why might this be the case? Do you think this is a positive or negative situation?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In some countries owning a home rather than renting one is very important for people because in most of the countries in the world people feel it safe and have freedom to work or to perform any activity in their own home. These works and activities cannot be done freely and happily with no fear in the rented homes. This is because the person or the people who are living in a rented home can never be a self owner of independent owner of the home , the renter always must follow the rules and regulations that were kept by the owner of the home or house.

This can be a case because many individuals in the country might be a student from another country who came for educational purpose or to study. If the owner impose a strict rules on these students they face mental stress and gets depressed.

I think that this situation is a negative situation because many people feel difficulty in staying in a home by paying rents. Many owner impose high rents on people, especially students .

In other perspective there is a positive scenario where some good and kind house or home owner offer a good and reasonable rents to people and do not stress the people with their own rules and regulations.

There some places in every country where owners offer a reasonable rents and provide good facilities to the people who stay in their home or house. But, we can say that renting a house is not a preferable idea when we or the people are living in other countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: reasons for the importance of home ownership and an opinion on whether this is positive or negative. However, the development is limited. The reasons provided—freedom and safety—are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. The argument regarding the negative aspects of renting is clear, but the counter-argument regarding 'good landlords' is underdeveloped and lacks a strong connection to the overall position. To improve, you should provide more specific examples or logical explanations for why home ownership is culturally or economically significant, rather than focusing primarily on the relationship between landlords and tenants.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes repetitive (e.g., 'This is because', 'This can be a case'). The transition between the reasons for ownership and the evaluation of the situation is abrupt. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'In other perspective', which lacks a proper linking phrase to connect it to the previous paragraph. Improving the variety of transition words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There is frequent repetition of basic terms like 'home', 'house', 'people', and 'owner'. Some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'self owner of independent owner' or 'perform any activity'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more sophisticated synonyms and collocations, such as 'property ownership', 'tenancy agreements', or 'financial autonomy', and avoid repeating the same nouns throughout the text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they often contain grammatical errors, such as 'If the owner impose a strict rules' (subject-verb agreement and article usage) and 'Many owner impose' (pluralization). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or conditional forms, with greater accuracy.
